Is a landline essential???

We are trying to save money and on our bt home landline we hardly ever use it and normally people that call us are the annoying sales ones, which are 99% recorded now anyway....the broadband is also via a cable so we dont even need it for that.
So we are thinking of doing away with the landline and just having our mobiles instead, has anyone else done this?
Will it cause us any problems not having a landline ?

Dont think so, as long as you definetly going to keep the cable broadband, because if you want ADSL (why I dont know) in the future you may have to pay a reactivation charge, although 3 months of not paying line rental to BT would outweigh this I should think.
Be careful when cancelling a BT contract as recently people coming to the end of their 12 months have been resigned onto another 12 month contract automatically meaning you have to pay the exorbitant get out charges0 -
No.
The only reason most people have for retaining a landline is ADSL. As you do not need this there really is little need for a landline.0 -
I gave up my landline for the same reasons as you around 18months ago. I have only had one problem in all that time and that was when I tried to open and ebay sellers account to sell a few bits of surplus childs things.
I was refused outright despite having several years of ebay buying under my belt with 100% good feedback.
It seems "computer says no" if you don't have a landline to confirm your identity to sell on ebay. I emailed over several months offering all sorts including my passport but it just can't be done without the landline.
This is the only problem I have found
Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0 -
And when the promised (yeah, right) reductions in call charges to mobiles come about, not having a landline will not even cost F&F more when they call you.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Wouldnt go back to an ADSL line now we have cable broadband as we havent had any problems since we have had it and its so much faster than the lines.
I will be careful about the contract :beer:but we have had a landline now for over 10 years and its now £70 a month  and we never use it so its just a waste of money really may as well use the free minutes on the phones we have that also never get used

The real downside is that it ties you to VM as your broadband supplier for ever-or at least until you have a BT line reinstalled. No free lunch, and no free laptop

What landline have you got that can possibly cost £70 a month if you don't use it for calls (or even if you do)? BT line rental is £11.54 a month. No free lunch, and no free laptop

What? Have you got one of those landlines which uses gold cables instead of copper?I will be careful about the contract but we have had a landline now for over 10 years and its now £70 a month  and we never use itTime has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
