When using chip in pin, why is it that on the many shop receipts, full card details are displayed?

I mean it contains your full card number, expiry date etc. Shop asstistants can get up to all sorts with your info if they were so inclined. And what if they don't dispose of receipts properly?

I thought it should only contain the last few digits ... what retailers show them all?0

I haven't seen too many of the retailers' copy of the receipts but those with the machines printing their copy immediately after yours has all your card details on it, I think everytime they keep all your number. Why does the retailer need these details when it should only be necessary for the processing company to see these details. And the Cheek is our copy of the receipt is usually starred out when we already have our numbers. Our details are not safe with staff!!! They are in the best position to see our PIN!!!! :mad:Happy to be happy0

if you use your hand to cover up the keypadNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
I agree with Funschine. I always cover my PIN everywhere!!! My Point would be a lot of people worry more about people behind them in the queue than staff, most people worry about their card being stolen by someone watching for their PIN when they are gifting their card number to the shop staff unwittingly!! I have also seen and want to highlight the fact that retail staff have access to our card number and I ask the question WHY?? I don't see the need for any retailer to keep a copy of the card number just the basic details we get on our receipt, with the transaction number to link the retailers copy of the receipt with the processing company's details for any possible queries later.0

We have a chip and PIN card machine for our business. If the customer is present, they pop their card in and enter their PIN & hand the machine back to us. It then prints a customer copy slip (with digits **** out) and a merchant copy of their card number.
It would be very hard for us to carry out another debit transaction without the physical card as we would then need to do a CNP (cardholder not present) transaction. For this we need the card number, expiry date, 3 digit CVR from the back of card, the customers postcode and house number.
We could perform a refund with just the card number but this facility needs us to enter our own "managers PIN" on the machine, designed to stop shop assistants refunding their mates purchases and other employee scams.
The card number itself is not particularly valuable, it is a simple string of numbers that are set according to ISO 7812, some with a checksum to make it harder generate random card numbers but still easy to work round.Signature on holiday for two weeks0 -

V man hav eyou asked why the retailer needs to keep a copy of the card numberNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
We need to keep a copy of the card number in case there is a chargeback later on. If we only had the last four digits, tracing a customer might be a little difficult.
(Chargeback is where the card company refunds the customer and takes the money back from our account).Signature on holiday for two weeks0
