  • Thanks Batcat, I have a Masters in Computing and a Degree in Art, (but 7 years retail management so I think retail is probably my best bet to get a job) I took a look at the Allstate site, but I couldn't be in either Derry or Belfast in a reasonable commuting time with the two children to consider as Im the one that has to leave them at nursery and collect them and the nursery closes at 6.

x12yhp, You are so right, I had not thought of that at all.

I'd have to be damn sure there were good prospects within a company to climb up the ladder

this climbing up the ladder business intrigues me. Just out of interest what exactly is the attraction of climbing up the corporate ladder for folk out there. Is it the additional pay, responsibility, feeling of doing well, more exciting work?

I'm just interested since having worked in the corporate life for a number rof years I came to the conclusion that climbing the ladder meant getting a bit of a pay rise, but having to deal with so much more s**t, stress, hassle etc that imho it wasn't worth it.

Personally for me it's a case of I've been doing the same job for 5 years and getting board.... Have done as much as I can do in my role. My company don't have the foresight to allow me to further develop my role which would make the work I do more efficient / cost effective..... it's not how their "systems" works... Personally I think it's because it's way over my bosses head and he just doesn't get it!! A case of I know more than him now and I think he knows it so is trying to "keep me in my box" so to speak! I see "moving up the ladder" as more of a challenge. (OK chances are you get more money but thats because as you say you have to take more cr*p for it.... which I don't mind as long as it is relavent to my job.... I curruntly get loads of cr*p put on me in my current job which has !!!!!! all to do with my job... it's more of a case of no-one else in the company has the brains to do it so it get's lumped on our department (we seem to be seen as the smart ones) which I think is also unfair to a lot of the other departments but then thats down to their managers holding them back too..... (again I can see a number of people in other departments who are obvioulsy smarter than their managers and their managers are holding them back)

Sad to see really.... is this something that anyone else sees in their work?
  • interesting, thanks.

There are so many managers in this world that just shouldn't be managers that is part of the problem. People need to stick to what they are good at and the problem is that a 'managerial' position is seen as the logical promotion step for someone who has paid their dues etc.

Ever think of going it alone - if its even possible in your line of work?
  • Funny how having a grumble can change things. I just got a phone call from a recruitment agency that I sent a CV to about 3 weeks ago. I have an interview for a job on Monday. Hopefully I don't mess it up!

Thats exactly the problem we have in our company. The majority of the "Managers" are there on the bases that they have worked here the longest.... absolutly nothing to do with their actual ability from what I can see... The manager in the sales department is really quite agressive and dominating of the staff she manages to the extent that she will "tell them of" if they make a mistake in front of everyone in the office which is open plan.... Unbelievable. this means now when a member of her staff has any doubt about a sales query thye will not attempt to answer it for fear of being wrong and getting a bol*cking from her.... it's bread, what we in our department call, the "Slopey Shoulder Culture" Let someone else deal with it!!

As far as going it alone. Have thought of it many times but i have a very young family at the moment and the industry I'm in has taken a bit of a bettering with the rescession and there are a lot of "one man band" operations out there doing the same work for what I can only see as minimal if no profit.... working just to keep themselves in work... they would probably be financially better of stacking shelves in Tesco's to be honest!!

If they are so barefacedly discriminating against you based on your nationality then why not report them to ACAS and take them to Employment Tribunal?
