Job Hunting in NI

Options
Hi,
I am job hunting and I am wondering if I am missing anywhere that may advertise. So far I check these daily:
  • nijobfinder.co.uk
  • jobcentreonline.com
  • recruitni.com
  • the government sites for Dungannon/Cookstown/Omagh/ Magherafelt and Craigavon (as I can commute to these within 1hr)
By the time I have got through these (and found very little) I feel completely dejected at the end of the day. I need to find a job at 14k+ for fulltimeto make childcare work out for us but I'd try anything at all at the minute just to have some cash coming in again.

Does anyone know what I am missing? Should I be looking elsewhere too?

Try registering with a couple of recruitment agencies too - they do permanent as well as temporary work and depending on your skills they may be able to place you

You seem to have most of the main ones covered there, may be worth trying local papers and of course your local Job Centre too.

Good luck with the job hunt, there is very little about at present:( and with Public Sector cuts kicking in there will be less in the next couple of years:eek: in that sector anyway, heres hoping the recession is ending and Private Sector employment starts to pick up again.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
  • Thanks, I forgot to add the local papers. I am checking those out too. I have had 2 interviews in the past week, which would have been a cert a couple of years ago, but the competition is so stiff now. The lady after me was in her late 30s and seemed to have a wealth more experience than me (I'm 28 and have about 7 years experience in management)

    Thanks again.
  • There are loads of jobs out there... BUT

From what I can see employers know there are also LOADS of people looking for jobs and hence offer crap salaries especially for the mid to low end jobs. Your always going to get the well paid manager roles but at the lower end the salaries have dropped of a cliff. I am in work but looking to change. all the jobs I've liked the look of which are a bit of a step up for me are actually paying less than I'm on so wouldn't really be worth it in my view. I'd have to be damn sure there were good prospects within a company to climb up the ladder if I was going to take a pay cut to move there and quite frankly no-one can garauntee anything at the moment.

My Daughter applied for a job in the new Asda in Antrim and the girl that interviewed her told her they had 10,000 apply , with over 3,000 getting to interview stage.

Oh Holy Mother of God!!!! I am going to jump off a fecking cliff now.

My latest temporary job ended on Friday just past- I really loved it, but it was with a council and they told me that tough times are ahead for them ....now I just want to sit and cry. Can't bring myself to ring the job centre to put in yet another "fresh claim" for JSA as the tears threaten when I put my hand on the phone.

Sorry OP I am not exactly the fountain of knowledge when it comes to job-hunting. It's abysmal being unemployed right now.
  • You're grand Snowy, at least I know others feel the same. We are lucky my DH is working and earning enough to keep us going but not working myself makes me feel worthless. First time I have not worked since I was 17

    Hi,
Do you have any experience in IT at all?
Might be worth trying Allstate NI. Very family friendly and a nice place to work:

lots of jobs at the moment, especially lower end tester type.
    Cheers,

Allstate sound good but there are some very bad reports about their lack of care for employees. Mind you, I am bound to have a bad opinion because their HR don't care enough to respond to telephone calls or emails.

That truly is depressing. Assuming it takes half an hour for a low level HR person to process and half an hour of a mid level individual to interview.... that means it is costing them £50k odds to get someone in the door. Considering that person probably will last less than a handful of years and be working a lowish wage, it is not at all unlikely that the recruitment cost will vastly exceed the cost of paying someone.

If this really is commonplace then I know exactly why wages are in the sh!**er!!
