Over priced postage?

I always undercharge for postage, makes for a happy customer = return custom. Oddly enough I can manage to do it and make a profit, despite sometimes having to wait an extra ten minutes for the courier to turn up or hanging around a post office for 5 minutes;) Its a great marketing tool to charge £2 for postage that appears on the customer's door the next day with £2.50 postage on it. The best thing about it is whenever I tell anyone they think I'm crazy and won't copy me:pLincoln_Imp wrote: »First time ever i was undercharged on postage ,got charged 6.99 but item cost 8.74 to post ..result
If you are a buyer whatever your opinion is is what counts, if you believe you have been overcharged contact the seller, they may have made a genuine mistake, if they don't refund the feedback you leave is what you feel appropriate.
It really doesn't matter what anyone else does its all about your own perceptions.
As a seller you should know that some are easier to please than others, its just about getting the balance right..0 -
A lot of people have to travel to the post office by car which all adds up, i tend to price my postage higher and make it clear, i do it for 2 reasons. one i start the bidding at 99 pence so no fees, and also the nearest post office is 3 miles away, even with the postage i believe the buyer is getting a good deal and ebay do not take a percentage of the postage.
Not only this it is very clear what the postage is on most listings a lot of people think great ive got a right deal 99 pence, 9 times out of 10 they probably got it at that price because of the postage cost's.
If you aint happy paying the postage then you shouldnt have bid in the first place.
Ebays gone downhill they take 10 percent of all sales and now they try and make you accept paypal so they can sting you again.
I would never have dreamt about dealing outside of ebay, but now if someone makes me a decent offer ill remove it and deal direct, just to save paying the high fees.0 -

Not really my problem (as a buyer) how far away your post office is, I'm afraid...!

It would be though, if you were buying from any other internet site. That is, you would rarely be charged exact postage only for an item. Your expenses have to be factored in somewhere, be it on the price of the item or the postage, or you go out of business. You, the buyer, are going to pay for the petrol at some stage.
So "not really my problem" - it is.0 -
Most businesses work to find ways of reducing their costs to compete with other retailers, rather than just expecting buyers to pay any cost just because "that's how it is".:www: :: MFi3 ::

And when you have done that, as you should, the buyer then has to pay the cost or there will be no business. I'm not talking about hiring a limo to go to the post office, just normal costs. Some are things you have no control over.
My point is not to be able to charge what you like. Just that no matter where you factor the costs in, the buyer will be paying.
What we have is the scenario where someone buys an item, say £5 cheaper than another seller, but the postage is £3 more. Seller two may end up with better ratings though he is selling at a higher cost.0 -
TBH I can't believe what some people class as exessive - when i recieve an item if it is well packed and gets to me in a good time i give a 4 or usually 5* rating - simple, i agreed to pay the postage cost in the first place when i bid, i have no qualms with a buyer charging me £2.99 then it costing them just £1 for them to post, especially if i get an amazingly quick service (i.e, it turns up the next day, and is really nicely/well packed and you can see a great deal of care has been taken).
At the end of the day i could count the amount of times i have wanted to buy something small from say Topshop or similar but can't bring myself to pay their flat rate p&p costs which are usually a very slow service too. Vertbaudet are the worst, Next are pretty bad in my area too. So you factor it into the total cost - i also check a sellers DSRs for dispatch time and what service they use before i bid - i'll regularly pay an extra 50p or £1 to someone who has a very high rating for dispatch, even if they use the same postage option as someone with a lower DSR for dispatch.
Take it all into consideration. TBH, i am a seller and also a busy mum so i don't have time to weigh all of my items to check how much they'll cost to post, or measure them and see if i'll be lucky that they end up going Large Letter rather than Small Packet once i'm in the post office (which makes it cheaper if LL) - i guestimate and yes sometimes i get it a bit wrong, big deal - if i overcharge slightly never mind, if i undercharge (which i have also done a fair few times) never mind either, i'll cover the extra as that's what i have said i'll charge.
If you want to go down this route then don't be surprised when sellers start asking for more becuase they have undercharged you instead - i bet you'd be horrified - it's the same thing IMO!
Quality is key - if they are offering that then i don't see the point in marking them down. No quality then of course, by all means mark them down!
And obviously if someone is charging a ridiculous price like £10 to post something that clearly costs a pound or two to post by their chosen method - simply don't bid, only they'll lose out for their stupidity! There are pictures on the listing, and i think from the description generally you get a good idea if something is way overpriced in P&P.Mummy of 3 lovely munchkins :smileyhea0 -
