  • Change bedding
Probably fortnightly, but you can cheat and change the top pillowcase weekly. If they want clean bedding they're old enough to put it in the machine themselves.
    Defrost the freezer
    When it needs it
    Hoover
A really good going over incl wiping all the skirting boards twice a year. Really. Maybe more often if you have pale carpets or visitors.
    Wash windows
    Spring and autumn.
    Wash curtains
I've never lived anywhere long enough the curtains needed washing.
Also, how do you manage your time? And how do you get the kids involved? Bribery/pay them? What sort of things is it okay for them to do at the age they are?
Fear usually works. A few decades ago a 14 year old girl would have been going into service as a scullery maid.

My 13 and 14 year old boys strip and make their beds once a week-we have a designated 'bed' day so that I don't end up washing all the bed linen on the same day.

They take clean laundry upstairs, hang it, take out rubbish (compost, recycling and waste), take out wheelie bins, bring in wheelie bins, hoover, wash up, lay table, clear table, help with cooking. But all of these are only if asked. They do them without complaint (apart from emptying the compost bin).

The youngest is 10 and will also do most of these things but with much more complaining. This is a personality thing rather than age.

The eldest irons his cadet uniform and polishes his boots. I'm thinking of making more use of this newly acquired skill.

As for routine- it very much depends on how messy you all are:) I have to hoover every day it seems but I never wash my curtains (no never! I suppose I ought to), beds are changed weekly, towels washed weekly, laundry done every day, bathroom cleaned thoroughly weekly, kitchen floor washed when feet start sticking to it, freezer defrosted when too iced up and inside windows hardly ever. I have a window cleaner once a month. But I'm very lazy at housework-prefer cooking.

Btw, a great way to motivate your kids to clean out their rooms is to get them watching Kim and Aggie. Mine are horrified by the state of the houses on that programme:D

    Good luck!

I'm not a single parent, but am responsible for 90% of the household duties in the home, what I would suggest is that your girls get to choose their own chores. They are never too young to help around the house and you will be teaching them important life skills. At that age they should be responsible for making dinner either alone once per week or together twice. It could be something as simple as cooking pasta and adding a jar of sauce or making a pot of soup and some sandwiches to begin with.

My sons are 7 and 10 and they are responsible for all vacuuming in the house and have been for the past year. Youngest DS does the livingroom and hall and older DS does the stairs, landing and they share their bedroom and playroom between them. I make sure they do it properly without being overcritical and show them bits they've missed so that they learn to be thorough. Having said that, I rarely need to now, as they are well trained! :o

They are also responsible for stripping their own beds and putting them into the WM. Your daughters could also manage washing and drying theirs themselves, I would think.

My house is in no way spotless, and I don't treat my kids like slaves, but they know what is expected of them (this is also because they are men, and I would not want to send them out into the world, and possibly on to future partners without having a clue!)

I have tried Flylady but find the thread bit overwhelming, but the bits I've taken from it are shining my sink (making sure there's no dishes dirty when you go to bed, and the sink is clean), swishing and swiping every night or morning (cleaning around the bathroom and loo counters/sink and sticking some bleach down the loo whilst washing at night/ doing your ablutions) and the HHC. (Half hour challenge, set yourself a half hour where you put some music on and dash round the house clearing surfaces, tidying up and generally making do before sitting down with a well earned cuppa)

Hhis helps a little. Sorry it's so long, I don't do "small chunk"

I decided to do some dailies before coffee, so DS2 and I did a quick QHC (quarter hour challenge) and we: cleared LR floor of toys, made one bed and aired other, emptied DW and put dirty dishes in, emptied TD and put clothes in right places (wardrobes/ironing pile), put WM and TD on again, quick tidy of kitchen/bathroom/our bedroom. Not bad.
I also hoovered through downstairs and DS1 is at least awake. I've just had a coffee and DS2 is eating a sandwich, then time to get washed and dressed so I can have a look at lists.

I know some of you have had problems with doctors' receptioists so maybe you could learn from this story.......................

    Ear Infection

They always ask at the doctor's reception why you are there, and you have to answer in front of others what's wrong and sometimes it is embarrassing.

There's nothing worse than a Doctor's Receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you, in a room full of other
patients. I know most of us have experienced this, and I love the way this old guy handled it.

A 75-year-old man walked into a crowded waiting room and approached the desk. The Receptionist said, 'Yes sir, what are
you seeing the Doctor for today?'

'There's something wrong with my !!!!!!', he replied..

The receptionist became irritated and said, 'You shouldn't come
into a crowded waiting room and say things like that.. '

'Why not, you asked me what was wrong and I told you,' he said.

The Receptionist replied; 'Now you've caused some embarrassment
in this room full of people. You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and discussed the problem further with the Doctor in private.'

The man replied, 'You shouldn't ask people questions in a roomful of strangers if the answer could embarrass anyone. The man walked out, waited several minutes, and then re-entered.

The Receptionist smiled smugly and asked, 'Yes??'

'There's something wrong with my ear,' he stated.

The Receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken
    her advice.

'And what is wrong with your ear, Sir?'

'I can't p*ss out of it,' he replied.

The waiting room erupted in laughter.

Mess with seniors and you're going to lose!
