Switching from Virgin to BT

Hi all
I am about to send a letter to Virgin to cancel my account. However, I've just read on the BT website that they will cancel it for me. Is there any harm in sending the letter anyway?
Cheers

Depends if it's Virgin National or Virgin Media.
As the latter uses a completely different system to provide broadband & phone than BT therefore the's no phoneline for BT to take over,I doubt BT'll cancel it for you.
If you've not got a BT phoneline in the house then you'll need to get one installed, which could be costly.
BT cannot use VM's phoneline to provide their service.0 -

Thanks for your reply. I'm with Virgin Media at the moment. I have my doubts too, but if you look at the website (can't post a link grr!!!!) it reads:You don't need to contact your current provider to switch - we'll do it for you so you don't lose service
And we still have our BT phone line box in our house, as we were with them last year. Any tips on re-activation?
Also, I might give Virgin Media a ring tomorrow as I'd rather get a better deal than go through the hassle of switching.

If you want to take your tele number with you from Virgin to BT its probably not worth you contacting VM as it may mess up the 'export' of the number from VM to BT, if you are getting a new number then it probably wont matter if you also call them.
All CP's prefer to tell you 'leave it to us to cancel/cease your old service' because they dont want you to call your old provider, be offered an improved deal to stay, then cancel with your new provider.0 -
With regards to your telephone line, if you are wanting to port your number from Virgin to BT then BT have to do it for you. If you put in a cancellation request for your phoneline it will make it difficult for both BT and Virgin to work together to port your number.
If you have other services such as broadband and TV then you will need to cancel them with Virgin yourself0 -

The quote you posted relates to switching to VM, not away from them!
Don't ever rely on BT or any other ISP to terminate your previous account.
You really ought to sort out getting your BT line reactivated before you cancel the cable service though. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
