Cheapest insurance for an old car?

I'm considering buying a 21 year old Polo but can't seem to find many insurers willing to cover it. Tesco will do comprehensive cover only at about £200. I'd rather have third party due to the sub £500 value of the car.
I'm not the problem as I'm 39, with 20 years no claims, in a sensible job and living in a decent area. Can anyone suggest insurers for much older cars please?

I don't think you're going to substantially beat the £200 fully-comprehensive quote given to you by Tesco.
It's not just the value of the car you've got to consider. Even 3rd party, they are covering you for hundreds of thousands of pounds, perhaps £1m+ of potential damage and injury you may cause others in a road accident.
No insurer is likely to offer you that sort of cover for something like £50 per year, in my opinion.0 -
I've just insured a 2002 Golf cabrio 2.0 se for £126 fully comp and the wife as a named driver........0

I insure my dear old dads (essentially valueless) car for him and found the cheapest way was fully comp but with a huge excess which does really convert the policy to TPO0

also check the cashback sites
quidco have insurers offering up to £60 just now
a large chunk on a low cost policy0 -
Thanks for all the replies. Dopester, you make a valid point which is perhaps a reality check for me. Vaio, good idea to make the excess bigger if that helps bring the cost down. I see what you mean as it does turn the policy into a slightly better Third Party deal.0

This is great advice and in the right circumstances is a good money saver.
The voluntary excess does not apply to Fire and Theft claims and also windscreen claims with most companies so it gives you in effect TPF&T with windscreen cover.
The companies that I know of who APPLY the voluntary excess to fire and theft claims are Swiftcover and Aviva, there could be others, you can check by looking at the policy wording.0 -
Try classic car insurance.
There are usually some restrictions but it might be worth a try for a car over ten years old.
I have a car (55 years old) insured on a classic car policy and it costs me about £120 a year fully comp.0 -
I’d be surprised if you could get classic insurance on a polo but even if you can remember a classic policy generally won’t earn or enable you to retain NCB so you might have to alternate between classic & normal insurance0

I have a classic policy with a company called need2insure, they were very cheap so maybe worth a call0
