Cross off Road Tax - no such thing. (It's Vehicle Excise Duty, don't further the myth).

Though VED, considering you get the "disc" when you pay - I wouldn't even consider this "paying in advance" same applies for other stuff.

The "have to" is poor, as you don't HAVE TO pay for contact lenses in advance...

    Correct.

Just like if you were to buy car insurance (or most other insurances), you pay yearly in advance or monthly with a little bit extra.

In fact, thinking about it, don't we have to pay in advance for most things?

They should take in advance at the beginning of the month, which is what they do. Until they get to the 6 month period then they end up taking in advance 6 months for every payment.

(Start of) Month 1: £24 (2 months paid)
    " Month 2: £24 (4 months paid - 1 month used - 3 owed)
    " Month 3: £24 (6 months paid - 2 months used - 4 owed)
    " Month 4: £24 (8 months paid - 3 months used - 5 owed)
    " Month 5: £24 (10 months paid - 4 months used - 6 owed)
    " Month 6: £24 (12 months paid - 5 months used - 7 owed)
    " Month 7: £12 (13 months paid - 6 months used - 7 owed)
    " Month 8: £12 (14 months paid - 7 months used - 7 owed)
    - this will carry on as 7 months owed(arrears) -

If you are paying a month in arrears it should always be 1 month owed - always.

I don't think the issue of paying in advance for a month concerns anyone here - it's paying in advance for the whole 6 months.

Do they make you pay for 6 months food up front?

Nobody "makes" you pay for a TV licence do they?
Don't watch TV, don't need a licence. Don't like baked beans, don't need to buy them and store them in your cupboard for months on end until you fancy some.

They should make it easy to pay monthly at exactly the annual charge divided by 12, no more no less.

By trying to play games with the punters they are not doing themselves any favors as this is a tax that is very easy to evade, so why give anyone an excuse to evade it?

No arguments there, that's for sure.

I don't think it's a case of playing games. I think the British culture is simply addicted to bureaucracy and doing things the difficult way "because that's the way we've always done it".
