I have just set up to pay by direct debit.

They charge you about £24 per month for 6 months so you are paid for a your first years TV license within 6 months, they then carry on charging you so that you pay for half of your next years TV license by the time it is due.

This means that the government (or BBC depending on how you look at it) have your money 6 months before they should get it!

This sounds completely unfair to me, what do you all think?

Surely this is a troll post?? Tesco makes me pay for food before I eat it, is that unfair too?

Nobody is forcing you to watch live broadcasts, you wouldn't shrivel up and turn green if you stopped watching television entirely. Equally nobody is forcing you to pay by monthly direct debit, in fact there are seven ways to pay listed on the TV licensing website:

Yes. You should do your duty to the economy and take credit.

I set the DD up. Let it run for 5 months, then cancel it. I set it up again 7 months later. They dont like it, but i dont want them having my money "in advance".

Do they make you pay for 6 months food up front?

How many people get six months payments reimbursed to their estate when they die? I'm a fan of licensing (I hate commercial radio) but have always been irritated by this six month premium weekly and monthly payers pay. I have never understood why it is there - it just causes resentment.

So if I cancel my DD, nobody from TV Licensing will contact me for six months because I'm six months ahead, right?

    Why don't I believe that?

Fair to whom? If you pay the licence in one go, you have paid the whole licence in month 0. So you are getting off lightly.

Thanks for this but I think you might be missing the point (and the person using the Tesco example)

I am not questioning paying in advance for a years license, I am questioning why, if I opt to pay through DD, I pay for a full year in 6 months, AND THEN start paying for my next years TV license 6 months before my old one even runs out.

If had paid in one go yesterday, then I'd have to renew for next years TV license on 10th April 2011, but through the DD payment option i start paying for next year in october this year.

    Hope this makes sense now???

And just to follow up on the tesco example, how many times do you go tescos and pay for half of next weeks shopping?
