Morses Club - threatening letter received addressed to unknown person

Guys
I don't know where to post this one. Please redirect me if necessary. Ive received a letter addressed to a Mrs Carol Wilson (not me) or any one at my address. I could see through the window on the envelope that it read Subsequent Notice of Arrears, so I opened it. It was as I suspected a default notice. This person apparently owes £500 to this company. I rang them straight away to advise that no person of that name lived at my address. They have told me to return the letter with a note to say "unknown at this address" and their auditors will investigate. Is this a case of identity theft? Anyone heard of the company? Any advice please:eek:

A quick google suggest Morses Club is a credit provider ie loan company based in Hallow, Worcester.

They are 'doorstep' lenders, now owned by Little Chef according to this article:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/banksandfinance/5110806/Doorstep-lender-Morses-Club-consumed-by-Little-Chef-owner.html

If they are doorstep lenders, with collecting agents, it seems a bit strange that you should be getting their borrowers post. I would guess that they have told the company they have moved and given your address (or similar). It could be a genuine mistake so I would give them a chance to sort it out.

You can check your credit record - I think this will show if a search has been done against your name or address for credit and when. I think poor credit ratings and 'black marks' are put against names, not addresses, these days.

It's worrying though. I had a fraudulent attempt to use my credit card, followed by some post of catalogues, brochures etc. addressed to someone with a foreign name arriving at my home. I thought this might be identity fraud.

Good luck with sorting it out.

Have you any idea where they got the information from? Surely the scum is the person who has used your address to obtain money?

It does seem a little strange that they had another persons name residing at your address to begin with! Did they give any indication as to why your address was used? Did you do a credit check as advised to see if any checks had been done recently by this company?

Wow, that's harsh! Somebody owes £500 to lenders and suddenly the lenders are 'toads' and 'scum'! What did they do to deserve that?
  • Not scum? Have you seen their APR? I've never seen anyone leave as quickly as when I pointed it out to them at the doorstep. They were terrified one of the neighbours would hear me, as it would cost them profit.

What is the equivalent of "Toads" and "Scum" on the stupidity scale??

It could be argued that as much as they are scum, the customers are !!!!!! enough to sign up to it.

The argument that "well people are desperate", is no different from a company "out to make a lot of profit"

Most of their customers wouldn't bother repaying all that money anyway, hence the reason for this post in the first place.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the company EVER made a simple transaction,
      *Agree *Sign *Lend *Repay

It's always that final step which falls over.

What they did to deserve that was not get their facts right and hounded me for money I did not owe. They have yet to explain how the error occured.

    I didn't think they did!!

I thought they sent letters to Mrs Carol Wilson but you took it upon yourself to open someone elses mail and busy yourself with it's content.

You could have done what you are supposed to do and stick it back in the postbox.

    # If the item has been sent to the correct address but you don’t recognise the name, they may be a former occupant at your address. Royal Mail is legally obliged to deliver mail as addressed irrespective of the name on it. Mark the item ‘Not known at this address’ and pop it back in the Postbox.

You are totally right mate. I should have  but having gone down the route I did, and contacting the company to advise of the error I expected some help and I got none at all. They appeared to think I was lying to them.
