Branded v. Supermarket petrol / diesel

I generally avoid filling up at supermarkets as far as possible, in a totally unscientific belief that BP/Shell etc. fuel (diesel, in my case) is "better quality."
Am I deluding myself? Will branded fuel really give me better performance / economy / look after my engine better?
And, while I'm at it, is paying extra for premium fuel, e.g. BP's Ultimate Diesel, worth the additional money?
I'd value any opinions / or facts anyone has.
Thanks

You are deluding yourself - it's made in the same refineries.
"premium/ultimate/optimax/etc" fuel is only of any benefit in highly tuned engines.0 -
As above says..deluding yourself!!
I used to work in a Shell garage..the tanker delivery driver used to come and fill up our tanks,he told me he then goes back to refinery and fills up with the same stuff to deliver to Tesco etc
from the horses mouth so to speak!TO FINISH LAST, FIRST YOU HAVE TO FINISH....0 -
Yep, my local sainsburys gets the same fuel as the BP station a few hundred yards down the road.0

The supermarkets lack the additive blends that go into the branded stations.
It most certainly is not the same fuel, in just the same way that diet coke is not the same drink as diet irn bru.0 -

I was hoping for some debate! TBH, my mates hold opposing views, so I'd love to get to the bottom of the subject.0 -

They dont lack the additive blends they have them as well, albeit they may be slightly different.
If you live in Scotland all your fuel comes from 1 refinery and its all the same oil when it goes in.0 -
I avoid Supermarket fuel, they have a nasty habit of ruining customers cars.0

That's why supermarket forecourts are deserted.
Do Tesco have their own factories making their own brand food, or is it from the same place that makes it for Birds Eye. Do Tesco have their own refinery or do they get from the same place as the branded forecourts.0 -
You have a very short memory if you don't remember when Tesco ruined thousands of customers cars with their contaminated petrol.
