wishaw general hospital

a+e deparment an absolute joke, a family member was admitted via an ambulance with a serious illness at 4pm she was triaged over 3 hours later by then it was to late to administer the drugs she would have needed. They say nurses are over worked , not in this department . There was no emergencies in the ward that afternoon just the staff standing about as usual:(

Are you saying that she got admitted via a 999 call and then was left in A&E for 3 hours without being seen by anyone and no other people came into A&E to be seen as an emergency? Did the paramedics just dump her there and walk away? Did you query the wait with the staff who weren't doing anything? If so, you need to be complaining to make sure it doesn't happen again. If you contact PALs in the hospital they will follow this up for you.

she was put in a bed and left in a cubicle until she could be assessed, questions were asked on numerous occasions as to why she was not being attended to only to be told we are very busy the doctor will be round as soon as he can. I do not deserve special treatment everyone has to take their turn and sometimes you have to wait for hours to be seen i accept that , but when there are adverts on the telly telling you about this illness and how quickly you need to respond to it then have to wait in triage for 3 hours you do get a little emotional

I doubt very much that you would be privy to that information.

Have you asked for an explanation as to why there was a delay in treatment?

I don't quite understand, did she need the drugs or not? I'm sure if she needed them and was admitted into A&E Via an ambulance then if she needed some sort of drug urgently then they would have got them for her.

I was rushed into hospital in the early hours of the morning and although the pharmacist at the hospital had finished for the day they were still able to get the medication they saw was vital that I got.

As for the nurses not being over worked maybe if your relative has had to stay in the hospital then you'll see how over worked the nurses are.

I was in for 4 months and there were days where a nurse came to give me my medication at 8am, saw to me throughout the day, the shifts changed later on which was then time for this particular nurse to do her paperwork for the day, she came to check on me at 2am still there from 8am then was back at 7.30am the following morning. Just because you don't see it at that exact time doesn't mean that they aren't over worked.

By the way I hope your relative was sorted out and she's making a speedy recovery.

Broonbear I take it your relative had a stroke. I hope that she will recover well. You shoule contact the patients' supportgrup at the hospital if you feel you would like to take this further.

I appreciate that you are upset, but your initial post is very unfair considering that you do not appear to know any of the true facts of the situation. Whilst there will always be exceptions, the great majority of medics are committed to providing the best possible care for all patients.

Broonbear, I can totally sympathise with you.

Wishaw General A&E is a joke at the best of times. 3/4 years ago, they left my daughter with a severe head injury for 7 hours. Laying unconscious on the floor of the hospital for an hour of this time. Granted it was a Friday evening and they were busy. Well they appeared to be busy up until around 3am. Then we were the only ones left in the department. I understand things are going on behind closed doors. Turned out she had a fracture to her skull and a cracked cheekbone. Nice letting a kid wait this long eh? Not even so much as a paracetamol for her pain.

However it's not the first time she's been put in the wrong list, minor injuries usually get put in one list, so a nurse can assess, where more serious injuries need to be seen by a doctor. I think they rather put people in the wrong list quite often. Waited 3 hours before for a broken wrist. The nurse explained that my DD had been put on the more serious list and apologised that we had been kept waiting so long.

On the whole, I'm quite happy with other things in Wishaw General, but the A&E department leaves a lot to be desired.

I can sympathise. Most NHS staff are great and it's true that you don't always know what is going on behind the scenes.

I once took my son to A and E with a head injury - I couldn't see anyone else in the main waiting room, but we were kept waiting 45 mins to see the triage nurse. I didn't even realise she was the triage nurse until we were called. She was sat right by us having a chat with a colleague about her weekend and booking a holiday for half the time we waited.

We don't go near Monklands or Wishaw for various reasons, fortunately we live right on the edge of NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde so we can ask nicely and be referred to Stobhill where the A&E department is superb. I was in yesterday (dislocated shoulder during an episode) and was in and out in an hour, that included x-ray, ECG (because episode is related to cardiac problem), a chat with the doctor about controlling episodes, shoulder relocated, box of pills and an explanation of when to take them. Also got a follow up appointment to check the muscles aren't damaged because i've torn muscles in this shoulder before.
