Have been receiving calls from this number over the last few days. If I answer the call, it is hung up at the other end immediately, If I ring the number back it tells me "this number has not been recognised".

Has anyone else received calls from this number?
Does anyone know how it is possible for a number to not be recognised like this?

Worried this is some sort of scam, but don't know what.

Thanks is advance

Looks like an incomplete number to me? Have you googled for it?
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Their is no such numbering range as 07178 in the uk.The senders eqpt is probaly sending the wrong no,either deliberately or in error.

If you dont call unknown numbers back how can you be involved in a scam.

I have had missed calls from a number 0717 - when I called back it was an indian call centre. hung up immediately.

    the scam is as follows:

they do a one ringer to your mobile (you sometimes do not even here it ring!).
you call back and get charged a stupid amount of money (they keep you on the phone asking you name/address/provider etc etc).

I now ignore these calls - if someone needs me, they will leave a message.

I have a company mobi, many of our staff have been hit!!!!!!!!

But their is no such numbering range that starts 0717. You probaly mean 07017. Any numbers that start 070 cost an arm and a leg to call.

Due to these scams where the reciever of the call illegaly recieves a a share of the call.O2 have barred access to some of these numbers.

    Code: 070 287
    Type: Mobile
    Use: Personal
    Operator: COLT
Tariff Band: Personal Numbers 50p (pn2) (inc VAT)
    Service: Personal

It's definitely 0717873629. We've been getting called by it as well.
    Think we'll just ignore them.

This sort of number rings a bell for me.

Recently, we started getting a lot of 'dead' phone calls. We've been signed up for TPS for quite a few years, so these type of calls were a real blast from the past. The starting code didn't exist, and I couldn't even find a referrance to this dialing code on Google.

On one call (a rare one that someone spoke), someone offered me a 'free' mobile phone. I explained that we NEVER sign up for marketing calls, and are signed up for TPS, and how did he get my number. He explained that we must have signed for these calls, and I needed a cancellation code to stop them, or they would keep calling. I asked him how I get the code (on top of me asking him to take us off the database), and he hung up the phone.

Quite a few silent calls later, I had someone else on the phone offering a deal. This time, I said I wanted the company information before I spoke to them. The guy didn't know how to deal with me! I asked him 5 or 6 times for his company info first. The phone was handed over to someone else. He said he was a supervisor. I asked him for the company info, and he asked if we were with the TPS. I told him yes, and also, because we had so many of these silent/marketing calls recently, I had reported the calls to the BT security department, and they were monitoring our phoneline. I told him that the calls were being recorded, and I was prepared to follow up any action through the courts if necessary (none of this was true, apart from the TPS bit).

Since this last discussion, we have not had one single marketing/silent call. This is just the same as it's been for a long time since before this (definately rogue) company started the calls.
