Yes I did wonder if I needed a separate external hard drive seeing as I have pretty much the same data backed up on all 3 pc's. There may be the odd document on one that's not on the others, but nothing important.

I also have everything backed up to Skydrive so maybe I don't need an external hard drive?

What is the alternative to USB2, is it firewire? How will I find if I have this?

I have had a look on Amazon, but all the hard drives I've looked at so far have been USB 2.0.

Do you have FireWire connections on your machines? If not, don't waste your time.

I've got a Seagate 1Tb external drive. They're £64 on Amazon. You just plug it into your USB port, and you're set to go. You can just drag and any files and folders to it, and/or set your pc to do regular backups, disk images.

Not that I'm aware of. How do I check?

I think that it is not realistic to compare this Click free with just any hard drive.
I have one of these and it is invaluable.
In my case I have some techie knowledge; more than some but less than others but if this device is compatible then it is a really excellent 'learners' way to back up.
I have backed up my own and both my DD's laptops onto mine and it is so easy to use.
Next time it then 'finds' any new files and only backs up new or altered files without any of the hassle of remembering yourself what should or should NOT be backed up.
I realise it won't suit everyone but I am very happy with mine and accept the price for the facility it offers.:T
