Not entirely sure if this is the right forum for this. Feel free to move if need be.
Essentially Sony have intentionally removed a feature from the PS3 via firmware and at least one owner has had a rebate of £72 from the retailer to compensate for the loss of functionality.
(Sorry can't post a link as a new user, could someone post a link to the article on geek.com under the "games" section then under "games picks" on the right)
The retailer in question was Amazon, but given that European directives state that as a consumer you have a right to expect that an item purchased should perform all advertised functions then it makes sense that every retailer in the UK should by iaw be compensating all affected users.
Given it's free money, I reckon it's worth a go for anyone with an old style fat PS3!

Good. They are £72 down and I will not buy anything from Sony until they stop their 'Intellectual Property' crusade and restricting consumers.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Thats interesting news. I have a 'Fat PS3', but it is a re-furb from Sony after my original developed problems, will I still be able to make a claim- and if so from whom- Sony or the original supplier? You live..You learn.:)0

Several posters would prefer this wasn't discussed for some reason.

You misunderstand the point being made in that thread.
My point was that you cannot "assert your rights under EU directive 1999/44/EC" as stated in that thread, because the directive does not give a UK consumer any rights whatsoever.
Your rights as a UK consumer are embodied in the Sale Of Goods Act, and anyone who says what the OP did in that thread is simply perpetuating a common and misleading Urban Myth.0
