Internet Explorer will not launch

Hi all

My BIL as a problem with his laptop.
Internet Explorer will not launch from either the icon on the desktop or the item in the Start menu.
I've been into Control Panel and reset the Internet Options but still no joy.

Anyone any ideas?

    Just done a bit more digging via Task Manager
    It looks like the process is starting, but it's not opening an IE window.
    Don't know if that helps or hinders but at least it's a bit more info.

    Upgraded to IE8 and it launched when it first rebooted after the install.
    It wouldn't go to the homepage even though the network strength was at max (it's on wireless) but now I've got the same problem.

    A bit more Googling suggested running sfc /scannow but it dies at 76% with a message of "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation". I launched the CMD window as administrator.
    An sfc /verifyonly (another Google suggestion) completes OK with a message saying it found integrity violations.
