The company that started the direct debit can cancel it.
For example when you cancel with tv licensing they stop your direct debit, but they do say "if the payment is within 5 days then you need to cancel it yourself" so it takes a bit longer for them to cancel it, but they certainly can do it.
Are you sure they actually cancel it, rather than simply stop taking money from it. I've got a number of DDs still on my account even they are no longer active. Just as an organisation can't setup a direct debit on your account, it is you not the company that instructs the DD to be set up, I'm not aware that they can't actually cancel one.
  • Just because it is a Direct Debit, does not mean you don't have to keep an eye on it.

It amazes me how many people use this line of "I didn't realise my DD was cancelled". Yeah right! I am sure you would have noticed if they took double the amount they were supposed to.

For God's sake people, please check your bank statements!
You do have rights......but you still need common sense.

Thet's a bit out of order!!! encouraging someone to rip someone else off!!

this is going to sound a bit off but my theory is...
OP cancelled the DD (as only he or the bank on his instruction could cancel) and then realised he was still being sent his lenses and thought great free stuff!!!
has now been caught out and is looking for ways to wrigle out of his responsibilities.
If he can't afford to pay double to pay off the arears do you honestly think he wouldn't have noticed that the payments wern't coming out of the bank every month?
    No, neither do I...

Thanks for your comments but actually everything is as I stated - no, I don't check my bank statements carefully enough, and no I didn't cancel the DD - if that were the case do you seriously think I would advertise an apparent fraud ? I only want to understand what my options are to repay before I speak to the Optician - and I'm not trying to wriggle out of this. Thanks anyway for your judgement.....

Thanks Angel Cake - it's taught me a lesson - i had assumed that unless I cancelled the DD id would go on forever - I will check them more accurately in future! I spoke to the Opticians today who acknowledged that the cancellation was ther mistake, and they are giving me time to pay.

Thanks to everyone for their guidance.

well as this a money saving website you should be keeping a better eye on your finances. Yes you will have to pay but its normally considered to allow you to pay back teh debt over the same time period you acquired it in.

It was because they wanted to check their facts, something they couldn't do on a busy Saturday morning - a week later it was sorted

Thanks to all of the other correspondents and their constructive advice. This was the first time I have used this resource and will do so again.

Don't quote me, but look into it - "6 months".

How far back can they expect you to pay? I know with some other things the level is 6 months, although I am not sure how it applies here.

It never ceases to amaze me how many cyber saints there are floating around stuck in front of a keyboard. I bet you a year's supply of lenses they wouldn't volunteer to repay in real life if they could get away with it.
