I would recommend that anyone who is staying in SF to also do a day trip to the Napa Wine Country. You can get a minibus tour from downtown SF and they drive you out (over the GG Bridge!) and it only takes about 90 mins. You spend a lovely day visiting the wineries and tasting the wines and then you get a boat back to SF. Just bliss.
  • If you can find the time then do them both but otherwise it's got to be San Fran it is by far one of the best places I've been to there is lots to see and do..... listed by everyone else....check out onlyinsanfrancisco.com and alcatraz.us for tickets before you go.

If you can stretch your time do the pacific coast highway from San Fran to LA stopping for nights along the way it is a fantastic trip but you really need to make a long holiday of it, we did 3 nights San Fran, 2 nights pacific coast highway, 2 nights LA, 2 nights Palm Springs and 3nights Las Vegas it really is highly recommended you get to see some great places and take in all the sights.
  • LOVED San Fran....one little gem we stumbled upon was taking a short ferry over to Sausalito - small historic coastal village with a very arty/boho feel to it, lovely for an afternoon away from the madding crowd, we just sat in the gardens eating ice cream and strolling along the promenade, looking at the different artisan wares on offer - bliss!

is a kind of fish soup/stew, think of it as similar to cullen skink and you won't be far off.

Oooooh I just LOVE clam chowder! Sorry to be off topic, but couldn't resist saying that I will be in Cedar Key, Florida in a few weeks, partly so I can sample the World Champion Tony's Chowder! Can't wait!:j

Suppose I should add- never been to SF, but didn't like LA at all - huge disappointment.

I went there in february for a conference and the weather was beautiful - 18 degrees and sunny. It can be chilly that time of year but probably at least 10 degrees.

Although it was not beach weather - I did dip my toes in and there were some hardy people swimming! I was told the summer (june to August) can be more of a let down as it gets very foggy.
