San Fran any day!! It's amazing. I did 4 days in LA and 6 in SF 18months ago. I wasn't that fussed on LA. It's absolutely massive, you need a car to get around. Beaches are ok, Disney is fun, wlak of Fame ok.
But SF, ah I loved it! It has an amazing vibe, you can walk round/use trams easily. Loads to do. Alcatraz is fantastic, Golden Gate bridge is awesome. Good shopping, restaurants, parks, loads to do.
I went on my own and felt perfectly safe there.

I would definitely pick San Francisco every time.
More of an atmosphere and seem more self contained, and very easy to get around. Tourist stuff is fab, there is loads to do and see. Personally I loved the Golden Gate Bridge, and my favourite trip was the boat tour round the Bay.:)
In contrast I thought LA was a bit souless, although I enjoyed my trip, I felt I saw all the highlights, and wouldnt really want to back. I would go back to SF anytime though.

LA = busy, busy, busy. Congested, people everywhere and actually not that much there for a toursit, in my opinion ( before someone shouts at me, its my opinion ! ).0 -

If i had to choose, i would pick San Francisco. Its my fave city ive been to in America.
Highlights include :
Coit Tower for fab views
Alcatraz (amazing audio tour)
Lombard Street
Golden Gate Bridge
Chinatown
Ghiradelli Square
Cable Cars
Fishermans Wharf
North Beach
Transamerica Pyramid
Union Square
Haight Ashbury

SF is smaller & more compact than LA. It is much easier to move around the city & you could prob see most things in 4days. We were there for 3 nights but prob could have done with an extra day to go to Sausalito & the Golden Gate Park. Other than that we manged to fit in all of the above & more. In LA you definately need a car to get around so this is worth considering. SF also has great shopping, dining & just an overall great atmosphere. We stayed in the Chancellor hotel, on Union Square.
Lots of people on this site seem to hate LA, however, i really enjoyed my time there too! It has a bit of everything, beaches, theme parks, shopping, dining, famous sites (Hollywood sign, Walk of Fame etc) & i think you could have a great time here too.

As usual you seem to just choose the contrary option to everyone else.
I have been to every one of those places you mention, i enjoyed them.
However I enjoyed San Fran more.
You got a problem with that ?0
