Broken TV, Play.com will not replace.

About 2 yrs ago my boyfriend purchased a TV that cost £400 from Play.com and it had an extended warranty of 2 years. In the last six months there started to be problems with the TV.

We contacted Play who told us it wasn't their problem and that we would have to get in contact with the manufacturer. We tried this but the manufacturer went out of business. We can only find information about the UK distributor.

We took the TV for repair and Play.com refunded this repair but within a few weeks of the repair being done the TV broke again. This time we were told that the problem with it was the LCD screen and that the repair center were unable to source this and this made the TV unrepairable.

We got back in contact with Play.com and asked them for a replacement TV but they are now telling us that due to the usage and age of the TV we are only entitled to £180 refund.

We obviously feel cheated here as the TV was a lot of money at £400 and it didn't even last two years. It also stopped working within the 2 year warranty and we had to travel to get it fixed etc etc. To get a replacement to the same spec would cost a lot more then £180. You can still buy the same TV's online and two years after we bought ours they are still £366-£390 new. Are we entitled to more from Play.com then they are offering?

Thanks

But you have had two year's use from it haven't you?
What value do you place on that?

If you imagine this tv has a life of four years, and they have offered you £180, then that sounds about right doesn't it?

    What make and model?

Well it is about a years and a half use because when it broke it broke before the two year warranty was up. It;s also a second tv so hasn't had constant use and was in the bedroom.

Do you really expect to pay £400 for an item to last four years? My parents tv is over ten years old and still going strong. What happened to items lasting?

A PS3 is around £300, I think I'd be rather annoyed if it only lasted 3 years!!!!

The TV is a Viewpia LM26IEB6

When buying a TV with a built in DVD player, you're effectively paying disproportionately more for a compromised model. The TV won't be as good as a stand alone model and the dvd player won't be as good. It seems the only benefit of that model is it's easy to region crack, but the set itself, even on paper looks unimpressive. I doubt it handles movement very well or upscales to a particularly high standard either.

I'd recommend getting a stand alone TV and for £300 you can get something relatively decent, then get a separate DVD player.

AFAIK play.com doesnt even have to abide by SOGA, though, so you got a pretty good deal out of them.

I agree. This is more then fair as this is pretty close to the straight line method of depreciation which considering they dont have to abide by soga is very good.

One last thought OP, did you pay by credit card?
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

    Why not?

They have their own "SoGA" that is very similar to ours, in respect of this thread;- Part 10. 78-82

Also, if you paid via credit card, you can try claiming back via the CC company, since the two year warranty was part of the product as a whole.

So what did the UK distributor have to say about this?

On their website it clearly says that they supply a two year warranty on Viewpia televisions.
