Something fishy !!!

Hi,

I could really do with your help/advice with this one.

i've sold two items within 24 hours both of which to unconfirmed addresses, i'm not a big seller or an experienced ebayer and have not come across this before.

when the first item sold last night i was unsure what to do so checked through here to see what advice had previously been given and did all the checks advised. the first item i sold is over £60 and i really dont want to risk sending to an unconfirmed address so i emailed the buyer and explained that i can't send to an unconfirmed address and asked him to contact me. i've had no reply has yet. not sure if i'm even allowed to not post just cos it's an uncomfirmed address with ebay rules ?

Then today another item sold, a similar item but less value (£16) again an uncomfirmed address.

I have checked the buyers, both are listed as living in totally different parts of the country, one is a home address, one a business address. neither have been members long, one member has a fb of 2 and has purchased from 2 sellers leaving none of them fb. the other one has used a previous name up until beginning of June and is now using a different name. has a f/b of 30 all positive but all from members with 40 or less fb.

have i made any sense ? sorry if i've confused anyone but if ya can understand anything from my mega confused post i would really appreciate your thoughts

Rush x

sorry, forgot to add that 9 of the members leaving fb out of th 30 are no longer registered users

I don't think you can actually refuse to send an item to a buyer just because they have an unconfirmed address. PayPal advise that you send the item to the address stated on PayPal and send it via an online trackable method. For the item that sold for £60 you should send it via special delivery. The other item can be send via recorded delivery as this method covers items up to £32 and is also online trackable.

If you really don't want to send items to buyers with an unconfirmed address in future auctions add a line stating that you will only post to confirmed PayPal addresses.

the 16 quid one, go for it, post it recorded delivery!, it's 'only' 16 quid

the 60 quid one, you must post SPECIAL delivery, it's up to you on that,

technically you HAVE accept paypal for it, the buyer can make a non performing seller against you
and leave bad feedback for you

however, if you're not covered by insurance, why should you be backed into a corner?, ebay and paypal don't define exactly what happens when you're dealing with unconfirmed / unverified users

personally (and i've done this on several occasions) i'd back out of paypal and ask for another payment method
    money saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

Thank you both, i thought i probably wouldn't be able to just refuse to send because of an confirmed address.

i'm prepared to cover the costs myself to make sure they are sent recorded/special delivery for peace of mind, i'm rubbish at this p&p lark and always end up paying more than i charge :o

am i right in thinking that the buyer can take their money back from my paypal account even if i've sent the goods or would they only be able to do this through a paypal chargeback if they said they hadn't received the goods

would i be better to remove the funds and have them paid straight into my bank account before sending ?

i will be ok won't i if i get signatures to prove delivery ? they can't then tell paypal that goods where not received.

sorry to sound dim, i'm not too crash hot with all this :o

It doesn't really make a difference whether you transfer money from your PayPal account to your bank account because PayPal can just make your PayPal balance negative and then you would just have to repay the amount owed. However, as you are sending one item special and the other recorded delivery you are going to be able to prove to PayPal that it has actually been delivered.

Remember to only send to the address stated on PayPal and keep hold of the recorded/delivery slips.

I'd refund the £60 one and ask him to set up a confirmed address and pay again. At least give them the chance to sort it out.

I suggested that in my last email to him, wasn't sure if it was possible but that it might be worth a whirl. still had no reply from him tho

  • :D some people dont confirm addresses until they have been on ebay for a while, i know i didnt it invloves a phone call from ebay etc, doesnt mean they are up to anything, the buyer may be away for the weekend, pull his details and give him a call on monday if you have heard nothing and as sugested in an earlier post send it special delivery

I had the swame problem with a £80 transaction. The buyer said he had confirmed his address... and indeed, test transactions for a few pence came through confirmed.

Paypal confirmed on the phone to him that his address was confirmed, and actually emailed me to tell me this too. I eventaully accepted his 3rd payment... it was still unconfirmed but my gut feeling said he was ok... and I did have a mail from paypal to fall back on.

A really annoying glitch... annoying for both of us.

I sell quite a lot and a high percentage are to unconfirmed paypal users, a lot of people use their work address etc. but just cover myself with the correct postal insurance just in case....but regardless of that have not found a problem...... the paypal chargeback issue is a tiny minority and hardly woth worrying about but basically weigh up the risks, if you are not happy you could always ask them to send you a cheque with a bonus of reducing it by, say, a fiver.
