    30 years with Abbey!
    Loyalty doesn't pay :D

Do Abbey have chip and PIN terminals at their branch counter or do they still require a signature? Also, is it possible to withdraw money without needing a card? I would have thought if you didn't have the card, you'd need to show some form of ID?

OP, have you left your cards/wallet/purse unattended anywhere? E.g. at work or at a bar, etc?

    Thanks

No terminals at the counter just a signature required. According to T&C you need to produce your debit card to withdraw money unless you have lost your card then you can show your passport or driving licence.

I always have my card either on me, in my car or at home.

I leave my purse at home for the weekends only!;)
  • Everyone has been telling me that Lloyds has much better security, my wife is with them and gets text alerts for her transactions. Will be moving to them once this is all sorted.

i'm assuming if south harrow is your local branch, near nando's, then lloyds tsb is just further up next to nationwide on northolt road, towards thte station?

Lloyds are very strict, or maybe that was just with me, but their staff seem to be very good t what they do.
Abbey staff are rubbish, seems like they have employed a bunch of mates all having a laugh, and not caring about the customer

All the cashiers do is enter your account number into the computer to access your account. I wish they had asked for date of birth or address![/QUOTE]

I use Santander (regrettably) also. When I withdrew £500 over the counter last week, I remember the cashier asking me to enter my date of birth on the withdrawal slip. So, they are supposed to do this. The withdrawal slips are going to have to be produced. It may add to your claim against Santander if the dob is missing.

Agree, although there are some very nice and helpful people there if you look hard enough. Abbey has helped me out loads in the past but this is just to much for me to deal with so will be moving when it gets all sorted.

I have just phoned them up and got told that investigation is being done and there is not much I can do but wait.

I guess I have done as much as I can for now, just another 2 and half weeks of worrying if I'm going to get my money back or not. Thanks for all the replies!
  • Thanks dollywops, that is valuable advice. I will want to see the withdrawal slips if they are not going to pay my money back!

I think I will be really worried if this person did know my DOB!

Also, even if you don't leave Abbey, you can still also open an account with Lloyds. I have 2 accounts to help me budget, but its also useful if I lose one card or one gets blocked. Or if this happened.

Hopefully they will get it sorted, if it comes down to 3 weeks you can write a complaint into them, but refrain from doing it at just this moment. They will most probably realise its some random person withdrawing money!

Something to be aware of. Santander are in the process of issuing new "Santander" branded cards to replace the old Abbey ones (I have recently received one).

It is possible that a replacement card was intercepted - together with any additional information they may or may not have gained by paying in a small amount to the account before making the withdrawals, this would make cleaning out the account in the way you describe rather easy.* (Santander may now not disclose whether they sent a replacement card to you until they have completed the fraud investigation).

    * Edit: it is a long time since I have withdrawn cash over the counter at Santander - the DOB question rings a bell though and as others have said this is likely to have been asked and check for one or more of the withdrawals and, if so, will show up on the signed withdrawal slips.

Fingers crossed the money is reimbursed by Abbey asap, this wasn't your fault, all the best with everything mate.

pop into Lloyds and see if you can open one of their current accounts, i'm shocked abbey didn't offer you a free overdraft to cover the DD's etc

I took my 86 yr old mum into Santander on Wednesday to withdraw £500 from her current account. No Photo ID was required, but the cashier did complete a withdrawal slip which my mum then had to sign and write her date of birth on. There should be four slips like this for Santander to look at in your fraud case.
