Most of that type of problem is due to a failure in the seat / navigation device interface. A quick change of that item usually fixes the fault.

When I got my first SatNav unit, it initially created all kinds of confusion and, on occasion, offensive language.

Once I actually looked through the menus and settings and made some adjustments to the type of journeys and directions that I wanted, it all settled down and for the multiple journeys that I make for work across the UK, I now wouldn't be without access to one, for the final directions needed once near to my destination (eg. off the motorway and into the A/B roads).

To suggest that they should be banned because a few (minority of) drivers may have made daft or dangerous errors once upon a time and got in the paper is a similar suggestion to enforce prohibition because a minority of drinkers fall into the road every Friday/Saturday night due to being irresponsible drinkers. Ridiculous.

Used a TomTom ONE extensively for work (2000 miles a month) without problems.

    They're cheap and cheerful.

Nowt to do with papers - my comments are based on my daily experience of sh1tty driving by people who sold off their last braincell to buy a sat nav ;)

Out of interest, how do you equate the "daily experience of sh1tty driving" being solely due to the use of SatNavs and no other factor? Serious question.

  • My latest satnav is a garmin and I love it. The only thing i would say after using sat navs for quite a few years is this:
You cant just use it via the voice, because somtimes it will be "wrong" I.e you will be going down the road and there will be a slight bend in the road but essntially still looks like the same road. The voice will say " turn right/left" and you will think it means a side street but look at the map on the screen and its actually the same road but maybe the name has changed so it belives its a turn. It is hard to write down exactly what i mean but other satnav users will know where i am coming from. What i am saying is you will need to use a combination of both screen and voice, but it does become second nature.
Just be aware of your surroundings and if it wants you to go down a road you dont feel will be suitible just carry on going, most satnavs will adjust the route acordingly. Also look out for give way signs ect because satnavs dont recognise them, and ive seen many cars speed through them without realising.

Understand what you mean entirely, elektra! With that and the "keep right" that some units use to mean "don't leave the motorway yet," drivers definitely need to retain their awareness when using them.

Several things. Generally the satnav will be sitting square in the middle of the screen with a driver staring at it intently.

Secondly, they'll not bother indicating when their satnav tells them to turn.

Thirdly, they'll regularly be in the wrong lane.

Fourthly, they'll change their minds about the manoeuvre they thought they were going to make at the last second.

It doesn't take a genius to notice that the above things happen when that brightly coloured screen changes the picture! ;)

Lol I'm far more likely to do the above when NOT using a satnav - I am hopeless at trying to remember a route. I find it far easier to just drive and be told I'll be turning left soon.
