Given the OP already has N Dongles I suspect they already have an N router already.
Yes, I was on 10Mb, if I had increased to their 20Mb I would have kept the same modep and wireless router. Because I went to the 50Mb they had to send a engineer and he installed a new wireless router (2 aerials) a new modem and left me with one N dongle.0 -
My desktop is a HP All In One, about 12 months old. I have looked in Device Manager (network adapters) and it says I have a 802.11n Wireless LAN card.
Does that mean I don`t need the dongle supplied by Virgin in this machine?
I have that machine in a room away from the router and through a couple of brick walls, so not expecting top speed.
Alongside this at the moment I have a 3 year old laptop with the virgin dongle attached.
Doing a speed test on both machines using speedtest.net is throwing up some strange results.
On both machines I am getting download speeds of anything from 6Mb to about 24Mb. Had one 32Mb on the laptop.
Upload speed on both machines stays around 1 to 1.5Mb, seems low.
The desktop which is used most seems to be hitting around 20Mb a lot. I tested this when I was on 10Mb and was getting about 9Mb. What I don`t understand is when on 10Mb I was getting 9 but now on 50Mb I am only getting around 20.
So could I have increased from 10Mb to 20Mb and still got near 20Mb and saved a few ££££??0 -

Bold bit is correct.
Are you able to do a speed test with a laptop, then plug it in and do the same? So you can compare.0 -
upload speed is probably right. usually low compared to download0

Yes, tried that, there is such a range (5Mbps to 32Mbps) on the laptop that it`s difficult to know what is making a difference.
I think the desktop is more consistantly high (around 20Mbps), but the only time 30Mbps has been hit (about 3-4 times) has been on the laptop.0
