PS3 and 50Mb broadband

Just upgraded to Virgins 50Mb BB, got left one dongle that needs to be attached to a computer to get the 50Mb, they only supply one.

Have 2 more computers and 2 PS3`s which ideally would all want to be able to receive as high a speed as possible.

I assume I just need to get a couple more dongles similar to the one they supplied for the laptops, but what do I need for the PS3`s, both of which are used wirelessly.

What do you mean by dongle? Virgin should supply you with a router (a little black box with green lights on it) and then a wireless router with a one cable running from the router and one from your phone line.

Once your router is up and running you should be able to just configure all of the devices to pick up the wireless signal.

Yes they have and if we were wired that`s all we would need. As we are wireless, we also need a dongle in each machine (apparantly). The one they have supplied is a D-Link N USB Adapter.

Can`t see how you can use one of these on a PS3 as you need to install drivers from a CD.

OK you can get different types of signals.

G and N are the 2 main ones.

N is a lot faster than G.

However, the default is G.

You have obviously been given an N router and N dongles to go at the faster speed.

However you won't be able to do this with the PS3. I very much doubt the dongles will work. However, you should still be able to connect to the router with the G connection, however it won't utilise the faster wireless speed.

All models, excluding the 20GB model, include 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi. In addition to all of the features of the 20 GB model, the 60 GB model has internal IEEE 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi

As expected, you can get the G signal but not the N. But you can still connect normally.

however if you really want to connect the ps3 with N technology you could always get

I can't see it making a difference to the PS3.

You mean those where you use the electric wiring to get the signal? Are they as good as being wired?

Not sure what you mean by wireless router from virgin, they fitted one today with the new modem.

yes them things that use the electric wiring, it all depends on how good the circuitry is and i think the router and the xbox need to be on the same ring for it to work but you would have to double check(if you know a friend who has some homeplugs that you could possibly test to see if they work), ive briefly checked to see if my homeplugs worked with my xbox which they did and i didnt do anything else so cant comment if any better than wired.

When you call virgin and enquire about a free router from virgin they will give you 1, maybe you have 1 fitted already, is it white or black, dos it have ike 2 ariels sticking out the back

Given the OP already has N Dongles I suspect they already have an N router already.
