Oh well, that's one, now there's just the BT, Orange, Tiscali........... etc. etc.

Actually, they may be struggling (AOL that is), but I noticed their latest offer - £14.99/month for life including modem/router - is not bad as long as you can put up with having AOL installed on your system

if you have a router then there is no need to have that nasty aol software installed :) i've been with them a month went through quidco for £45 cash back, sold the router for 40 so plus one month free from them = £6.65/month for the years worth of broadband, not band and true unlimited downloads unlike most isps.

If you go for the AOL Silver deal with modem/router how do you set it up without installing AOL software

Assume once set up you use a browser such as Internet Explorer and for email Outlook or something similar;) .
    Regards

All you need to do is install your router software. Open up internet explorer and you are ready to go! To access your AOL email, you just visit https://www.aol.com or https://www.aol.co.uk .

    Hi,

I'd just like to point out it's not quite as simple as just setting up your router and off you go.

Unfortunately, AOL went out of their way to make it difficult for people to connect to their network without using their software, so there are a couple of things you have to do in order to make it easy.

When you sign up, you select a username and password - don't make this the name you intend to use (if you are relying on AOL as your primary email address), you can set up one for that after.
You need to have a username and password specifically for the router, so choose something that relates to that.
The password must be bewteen 6 and 8 characters and contain at least one number.

If you want any further info then shout,

    hapless.

I have recently received their netgear wireless router and there is absolutely no need to use AOL software, there isn't on dialup either except you need to run their stand alone Dialer to dial the connection.

With the netgear, just access it from your browser on http://192.168.0.1.
Enter username: admin and password: password. Run the router's own setup wizard and enter your aolscreenname@aol.com and aol passsword when the wizard asks and you are now surfing AOL broadband without AOL software.

I can log on with the router either with my primary screeen name (the one AOL gave me) or one that I have set up.

How to access AOL email in IE express and links to how to use other mail clents
    http://email.about.com/cs/oetipstricks/qt/et050904.htm

    To Service your AOL account:

For Billing, webmail, AIM, shopping AOL main etc
    https://bill.aol.com/

    For Screen Names
    https://names.aol.co.uk/

Live Help is not accessible without their software so you need 08002796771 or 01179191100

It isn't difficult at all. All you do is install your AOL router software using the step by step instructions, once this is installed you are always on, and you can use Internet explorer without ever having to go into AOL.

Lets hope they also start disconnecting users when you call and request to be disconnected without going through 30 min of abuse.
