Not grammatical but the verbal tic that makes some people pepper their speech with the word 'like'.

"Anyway, I was like and then she was like so loud. And I was like......" SHUT UP!!! (usually on a mobile cellular device on the train home).

I wonder if anybody has ever been beaten to death with their own mobile phone?

What is so difficult, I wonder (n.b. NOT wander) about remembering that:

    it's = a contraction of "it is"

its = "belonging to it" ?

    I love this thread :D
All these things mentioned annoy me, and I'm foreign!
Maybe that's the reason, if the post about teachers not being allowed to correct spelling mistakes is true! My english teacher marked every single error out - not that I made many, I've been reading in english since I was 14...

Have to say I do find myself guilty of that at times, not sure where I picked it up from!

On the subject of speech, I've heard people say - 'pacific' instead of 'specific' (even worse, 'pacifically' instead of 'specifically') and 'arctic' instead of 'artic' when talking about lorries! Aargh!

I apologise for this complaint, but here we go. I should have and could have not posted this and just kept quiet but I just couldn't!

Why do people use the word "of" instead of "have", or even "'ve"? For example " You should of seen his face" rather than "you should have seen his face". I don't really know why this annoys me so much. Yes I really do need to get a life!

Oh my goodness! I have found my twin!

I absolutely hate this too, I have no idea of why I hate it; it just bugs the life out of me. I'm a stickler for the proper use of language and grammer. Obviously I understand that there are many people whom through no fault of their own have issues reading and writing properly (dyslexia as an example), but I can't abide "lazy" use of language/grammer just for the sake of it. Nor can I stand "text speak". Abbreviations are fine, acronyms are fine. Text talk drives me nutty!

Hey love this thread but please excuse any mistakes I make here, I'm typing this on my Iphone.

I've always been bugged by "Hence the reason why", in my view "Hence" covers the "reason why" bit.

Also, I can put up with "James and me went to the shops" it has become almost normal to use "me" and "I" is often considered 'posh'. But, using "this is a picture of James and I" when it should be "me" bugs me as it's usually a sign of someone trying too hard!

Something I struggle with is effect and affect, I can never spell necassary [sp!]. And, I understand it is now ok to use "and" and "but" at the start of a sentance? But I never know when?

    Upto - it's two words!

    Infront - ditto.

Alternate instead of alternative (you can be excused if you are American and do not have a proper command of the English language).

Just desserts - grrr - it's nothing to do with puddings, you pudding. It comes from the verb "to deserve". It's just deserts, OK?

And 'alot'. The random merging of two separate words really gets to me!

Another thing that drives me crazy is the incorrect assumption that you can't start a sentence with 'and' or 'but'. I hear this at least twice a day from various clients. You can! Go read The Bible!!

    Fabulous thread.
