Thank you Duckie, I call it as I see it and that's what MSE is about. Thank you for realising my insightful contriburion was heartfelt....it makes MSE all the more worthwhile.
  • If you make the claim - word it carefully to the insurer. Along the lines of 'I've spoken to the manufacturer and they've advised that i've possibly shut the lid too hard causing accidental damage to the laptop' thats not lying and not fraud.

However if you said you dropped it down the stairs and they looked at it and it wasn't damaged in a way that matched what you'd said - then yes that probably would be thrown out. Fraud at wrost can mean a cancelled policy and you having to disclose having had that happen when you try to take out other insurance etc.. so cause you problems in getting future So check that first.

Most companies will normally have the laptop inspected and they will try to repair if possible rather than offer a new one.
Also if the do send cash or give you a new one they will most likely keep the old one as salvage. One of the ways insurance companies try to keep their costs down is by doing this.

Also bear in mind that you will have an excess to pay and any claim you make will lose you any no claims discount you have and most likely mean an increase in next years premiums.

So if the laptop is only worth a few hundred to replace and you have an excess of over £100 and several years no claims discount built up - then probably not worth claiming.

    Hope that helps.
Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!

Well it took a few days but finally a good, sensible reply that actually answers my original questions. Thank you Treacle.

:rotfl: Why clog up the board with a thread if there is only one acceptable response?

  • Hi JD, hows the feedback so far?

I had similar sort of issue with digital camera, I advised insurance company exactly what had happened (I didn't know how the battery compartment hinges had snapped, I too suspected faulty workmanship-materials), they replaced the camera within a week to newer model

given the thread hasn't been touched since April 2010 I suspect the OP is long past caring
