£1100 buys a nice bike  however how much do you want to spend?0 -
Im happy to spend up to about 600 i guess. I just want a really good bike that will last and be comfortable enough to commute with0

£600 is a fair amount
you really need to visit a shop and get a feel for the bikes
different frames suit different folks,i like Marins as they have a long top tube leading to a more stretched out riding position
however some folks dont like that0 -

I suggest you buy a Hybrid or a CX (cyclocross) bike not a mountain bike.
Both are essentially road oriented bikes which have components and frame alterations which allow them to be ridden off road. A Hybrid is an all rounder whereas a CX is more towards racing and speed.
Bike pricing, quality and components = the law of diminishing returns.
Up to about £1000 the frame and components improve in quality and durability, when you pass this point they don't often get better but they do get lighter.
You will get as many bikes suggested as you will posts but my money would go on the below, get some mudguards for wet days (you'll look like grandad but will be dry and clean), some good lights, a puncture repair kit plus a couple of spare inner tubes.

I'll second the suggestions of getting down to your local bike shop and trying a few different bikes - far getter to get a feel of what you like and don't like before parting with any dosh. You can always then order it online if you have to.
Good luck, let us know what you go for.0
