Virgin media - getting compensation..?

AHH moved house weekend just gone and had Virgin Media around yesterday to install my new service (transferred fro old address) well they drilled 3 holes in the house (and not very well, caused some bad damage to the outside brick work) and started laying cables all over the place.
After a while one of the engineers said the exchange box is having problems so the need to call out another team to take a look… fare enough.
A few hours later a knock on the door from the 2nd team, they explained that the junction box was too far away from my house and the need written authorisation from 4 of our new nabors (most are renting so need the authorisation from the home owner) then It could be weeks / months before the work is done.
Angry that im left without TV and internet I rind Virgin who tell me “sorry but these things happen” – I asked when they couldn’t tell that the box was too far away before drilling holes in my house and they said “I don’t know”
So I moved over to Sky and want to wash my hands of Virgin.
Im trying to get the engineers back around to remove the cable and fill the holes they promised they would do it yesterday but didn’t show up and same today.
I have been on the phone with the call centre manager trying to get compensation so that im able to get the holes filled, plastered and painted from the inside (newly decorated house and we are renting, don’t want it to come out of our deposit)
I was promised yesterday that the area manager would call me within 24 hours…and (s)he hasn’t…
So my questions for all of you wise people who may have had similar issues…
Is it worth chasing for compensation? Will they pay out for me to get this work done?
What’s the best way to get these peoples attention? It seems that I just get bounced around to different people who don’t want to help me.
I still have all the equipment (modem, tv box ect) can I hold this ransom?
Sorry for the long post – any help appreciated.

I have been with virgin since they took over from Telewest (I loved them)..... I would hold them to ransom with the equipment, Virgin are a waste of space, they mess you around and its a case of who has the more patience you or them.........
When my phoneline went down and I had to have a bunch of so called engineers in my house that couldn't sort the fault they denied that anyone had been......... What is that about........ It takes weeks and months to get anywhere.........0 -
Simply send them a letter at the company registered address giving them 14 days to remedy the damage and collect their equipment or you will employ some one and bill them for the full cost and dispose of the equipment, or simply just fill the holes yourself.0
