I need to buy a new car, and would like to know of any decent websites that can offer advice.
I would like a medium sized car that can do both short trips and long journeys. I have not bought a car before - I inherited this one, so some legit advice for a mechanical numpty would be very much appreciated.

    Debt-free and Proud!
And parkers have good reviews and comparisons for cars, and downloadable pdf guides on most models.

    Correct answer!!

Astra 1.6 old or current models if you want a good deal on NEW (as the verrrry new model isn't available in the full range as yet) are a popular sensible choice.

But tell us which ones you fancy & owners here will put you off, or let you know why they like theirs!!

Thank you for all the advice. Still a bit confused.

I may now go for a second hand; the depreciation on new was scary.

I have a healthy budget as I've saved up for years. I like diesels as they are what I'm used to, but I'd switch to a petrol if the reviews were good. I currently have an estate as I carry a lot of stuff about. I'm used to the space now, but I don't have to stay with an estate - a large car would be good.
The lack of leg-room for rear passengers in my estate is an occasional issue.

I've had my current car for many years, and I'm thinking of changing it because it's getting elderly, rather than wanting to change for the sake of changing. Reliability and longevity come way before fancy looks and gizzmos. Why on earth do I need bluetooth?

Should I wait until people change cars in August, or buy now? Is there still the new car thing in August? Shows how much I know............:o

Used car to avoid worst of depreciation, OK.
    "Healthy budget", OK
Don't have to stay with estate, but large car preferable for good leg room, OK
Here is something that answers your stated requirements, a saving of around on third off original list price for something inly a little over a year old (good value), still under warranty, diesel, plenty of leg room and "a large car".

If it's not quite what you were thinking I might need something a bit clearer than "healthy budget" and "large car" to go by to make suggestions ;) ... I also have no idea what your current car is other than it is an estate in order to suggest something of similar price / grade.

I bought a pre registered Corsa last October, 5 months old, never been sold,
18 Miles on the clock and saved thousands on the price of new.

Haggle, haggle, haggle, money off, tank of petrol, proper mats, at least.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I just looked at that BMW site. Am I looking at the correct one? £37,850?

Um, my healthy budget was absolute max of £15, preferably under £12.

Whilst looking for new cars I was keeping an eye on Skoda and Peugeot Teppee. The cars I would have *liked* were heading towards the £20.

Looking at used, I was looking at Passat types, or VW 2.0 TDi Jetta.
    That sort of size.

Cannot afford BMW. But can drive better than beemer driver :rotfl:
