Cheaper Electricity the Easy Way

  • Zero delta you have some good points except the radio because it is cheaper to run off the mains,it will use minimal power and you don't have to buy expensive batteries

I buy eight batteries for £1 in the £1 shop. My little radio uses one AA battery, which lasts about a year. That works out at 12.5p per annum.

Is that more expensive that running off the mains?

    Hi

For the next two weeks I'm going to turn off my PC and router off overnight (instead of leaving them on all the time) and see how much less electricity I use.

Spinningsheep - £120pm for your electric sounds extremely steep to me when you have gas central heating. Are you sure your supplier isn;t billing you based upon the wrong information?

    Hi

12.5 per annum sounds very cheap.

My internet radio can run on a battery costing £24.99, a charge pack at £30.65 or the mains. For me it's cheaper to use the mains.

(My previous cheap and not cheerful internet radio was mains only. Gave up after 18 months. Dropping it on the floor didn't help.:eek::rotfl::rotfl:)

I make that £30 per kWh. Mains electricity costs about 9 pence per kWh.

We are currently on a mission like the op on this thread, to cut our electricity units down. We were using an average of 19 units a day and were convinced that our neighbours were tapping into our electric supply!! Only after buying an electric monitor (the british gas owl bought for £22.50 from Amazon) did we realise how much electric we were wasting. I, like the op, do daily meter readings around 5ish (i know I sound like a real anorak) from the monitor which is quite accurate. Our average electric units used per day now has gone down to 12 units (woo hoo)

We haven't really made that much difference in our lifestyle, just to say that lights go off now, shorter showers, we don't do standbys anymore everything goes off, just goes to show if you make the effort these things can be acheived.

    Hey GRB,

You might not notice the difference immediately, but all the little savings add up.

    Best of luck.

    Hi KY,

Sorry, I don't get that. How does a 12.5p battery that lasts for 1 year equall £30? Or am I reading this wrong?

    Hi

1 AA battery is 1.5v. No idea how many kwh that is equal to.

I make it nearer £50, but suffice it to say that my original suggestion that batteries cost 'twice as much' was a vast underestimate! It's probably more like 300 to 500 times as much.
