virgin media broadband/tv/phone - help!

I don't know if anyone can help, and I hope I'm on the right board! I currently have b/b (M), tv (M) and phone with virgin, at a cost of £25.49 per month. I've now finally got myself a laptop so was looking at wireless routers. Virgin told me (from what little I understood of call centre operator's accent) that if I upgrade b/b to L, at £12.50 extra per month (!?) then a router will cost me £40.00. But if I upgrade to b/b XL at extra of £6.50 per month, router will be free. But it seems to me that if I was a new customer, I could get router free anyway with the L package, as they don't do the M package anymore. Has anyone had any experience or can anyone advise? Thanks!

Are you saying that the XL package is cheaper than the L package?
I can't help with the new customer/existing customer issue, but if you just want a router and you're happy with your current broadband speed, this model got good feedback when posted on HotUKDeals and it's only £23 + delivery:

Routers are free with all Virgin Media broadband deals when you sign up online so don't go paying for one!
M broadband is also not available to new customers now and Bb (L), TV (M) and Phone (M) is £18/month so you can probably get a cheaper deal than you have at the moment if your contract's near the end anyway.0 -
I also have that virgin package I pay 23.00 per month with -1.00 for ebilling.
I'm going to call and see if i can get it for 18.00 with a free wireless router. Thanks for the info Rufus0 -
If you get broadband L you should get a free router0

They also wanted to charge me for a wireless router even though I had been a customer for 13 years so I bought a secondhand one of E-bay for a tenner !0

Thanks for all replies - after posting I spotted the "Virgin retentions" thread which also provided me with some info. Right - (rolls up sleeves) - looks like I'm gonna have to do some serious haggling/persuading here - just hope I can actually speak to someone I can understand (might try phoning during daylight hours!) Wish me luck - I'll let you know how I get on!0

Just make sure you go through to the cancellations department - explain what you want - they will help you.
they are based in UK (Stockton and Sheffield) and are open 8-8 mon to fri and 8-5 sat
this is good time of the month to call as most agents will still have plenty of credit to put u on best deals0 -
Quick update - friend of mine has now given me router (surplus to requirements!) so sorted on that front, but still gonna have a go at Virgin to try and get a better deal. Will keep you posted!
PS - Thanks grimlea - will do.0 -
Just spoke to VM (got thru on 0800 952 8078 & pressed options for "wanting to leave VM) & I got thru to an English speaking person(!) who was helpful & friendly and after chatting agreed to send me a wireless router for free, (upgrading to b/b L), free eve & w/e calls (only had free w/e calls before) for £24.99 per month (was paying £24.49 per month) so then agreed to apply £6.00 credit to my account - making yearly amount the same price. Sounds OK to me! (Friend can now have their router back). Thanks for everyone's input!0
