Help! - Laptop screen spontaneously cracked!
Comments
-
I spoke to Acer and immediately they said "sorry, screen damage not covered". When I pressed them that it has been treated with care and is obviously a manufacturers fault he stalled for a bit then just came back with "sorry we're not aware of any screen problems with that model". Unbelievable!
I'm now dealing with Tesco who are being more helpful, but I'm worried they are just going to come back eventually with the same thing. What do I do???0 -
So Tesco have also got back to me and said they won't cover it either. I sent photos and they said based on the photos they don't think it can be a manufacturers fault. I have accepted that for now and we are looking into claiming on insurance, but we are sure we haven't damaged it. This is so unfair. A google search shows lots of Acer Laptops' screens spontaneously breaking. Where do we stand?
If I quote Sales of Goods Act at Tesco and say they need to investigate, won't they just come to the same conclusion eventually? It's my word against theirs but I am right!0 -
You'll get a better response on the Consumer Rights board, they'll be able to help you on the legalities of the situation.

EDIT: I see you have already posted there, well done.poppy100 -
Considering this is the Techie forum....
I would rather pay £70 for a new screen off ebay and fix the thing myself rather than spend the next 6 Months arguing with Tesco/Acer/consumer rights/SOGA etc... and be without a laptop.
The Consumer Rights forum is the place to wage war with soap boxes and such.
I couldn't be bothered with the hassle.
Is the crack in the same corner you use to open the lid? sounds like the lid is flexing too much. I can't see what else can move whilst it isn't being touched, can't see expansion causing it.0 -
think you'd need to find evidence elsewhere that this is happening to loads of people, if its a design fault you have a chanceEx forum ambassador

Fixing the screen yourself may make any warranty void, even if the screen itself is not covered by the warranty.DFW'er - Lightbulb moment : 31st July 2009 - £18,499

Thinking of spending???..YNAB says "NO!!!!"0 -
My laptop developed this problem just outside the 12 month warranty. An internet search reveals this to be a common problem with this manufacturer which Acer do not acknowlege. No response to any messages I have left by Laptops Direct who I bought it from. Acer just send generic messages. Only recourse at the moment is to advise potential buyers about doing business with eiether company. Trading Standards have advised the onus is on me to prove it is a manfacturing flaw0
