ok this is not much help with the windows problem exactly, just more of a precaution.
at this point in time i would try and get a ubuntu iso disk burnt off from someone else's computer, if you cant get one burnt of a lot of the Linux magazines come with one of the distro's included, however i usually recommend ubuntu due to the fact most people find it quite easy to use.
once you have got the disk pop it in your disk drive (you might have to change the boot order in your bios but this is easy enough but let us know if you need to but dont know how to do it) anyway once it boots up it will give you a few different options, pick LiveCD mode, this will run the entire operating system from the CD and your computers memory and will make NO lasting changes to your computer.
once this boots up properly it will allow you to access your hard drive (found under 'places' in ubuntu) so you can back up all of your important documents to a USB stick just in case something goes wrong and you have to reformat,
just note that if it does not either boot up or allow you to acces your hard drive the problem that you are experiencing is more than likely a hardware problem not software,Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
This happened to my laptop, it was caused by a virus. I had to take it to PC world and they sorted it out it would have cost 25 pounds if had backed up my files but because I had not I had to pay 90 pounds extra to retrieve my files. So lesson learnt back up back up back up. I now have an external hard drive.0

Just sounds like some corrupted files,
Boot the computer with your XP cd in and press a key when asked to go to XP setup, when it asks what you want to do press "r" to repair the machine.
Recovery console will then load up.
At the prompt just type "chkdsk /r"
The system will then do a full system and registry scan and repair any faults,
Reboot and you should be in buisness0
