laptop wont start up past microsoft loading screen

Switched my laptop on this morning everything was fine. Switched it on this afternoon and it wont load past the microsoft cooperation screen it just keeps loading and loading.

I've held down the power button, let it sit, then turned it back on & it prompted me with the start up options to 'start windows normally' or let it try and fix whatever's wrong '(recommended)'. I've tried both and it continues to sit at the same spot.

Also tried safe mode but nothing happens. :(

Anyone know if i can fix it? Thanks!

I had this on my PC last week. I used an Ubuntu CD to access any files that I wanted to save (loads of them).
After that, I put a Windows XP Pro disk in the PC and was able to use the Recovery Console to perform the chkdsk utility to check the disk and perform any repairs.
The PC booted up fine after that - first in Safe mode so that I could run Malwarebytes then finally booted up normally.
That was Sunday and it's been working fine since.

The machine is old (2002) and is running XP Home Edition.

    Hope this helps somewhat.

this may be a silly question... but have you changed your Anti Virus settings...

a long long long time ago, I once set my AV to do a full system scan on startup. And I then wondered why it took AGES to start.

It may be a long shot...
