Getting a mobile contract with poor credit rating?

I am currently near the end of a contract with orange, and want to start a new contract on another network with a htc desire. Thing is both vodafone and t mobile have failed my credit check. (from equifax my score is 337 which falls in poor).
I think the main issue might be that i am not on the voters register yet having moved house in late December (paperwork submitted but not gone through yet) however i lived at my previous address for over 7 years and have never missed a mortgage payment or any other bill in my life. Im 32 years old.
Thing is i am a sensible chap and tend to pay cash for most things so i dont have any debt history apart from my mortgage. But i would have thought i was a good risk?
I make a decent salary, have a decent amount of savings, a secure job (police sergeant) and have never missed a payment on anything ever. So why will nobody give me a phone contract? are there any companies who actually make a more detailed assaement of my situation? is it worth going into a shop instead of online where i can produce proof of address, id etc?
i really need a new contract in the next ten days aqnd to be honest im finding the situation very frustrating!!!

The problem probably is that you don't have a debt history- i.e. you pay things back. Mortages doesn't usually come into it- I suggest you get a cashback credit card. Pay it off every month, build a credit rating and make some money!Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!0

The Op does have a Credit History although not a comprehensive one
He has a mortgage and mobile contract to start with
Debt history you make it sound like you are better off being in debt and then lenders will give you more
Electroral Roll is the main problem here probably at the moment
You are applying for credit at your new address not the old one you lived at for seven years although that shows that at least you do register at addresses.
Mobile contracts are a strange one sometimes easy to get sometimes not Can be luck of the draw occasionally.
If all else fails maybe try appyling for a Sub-Prime credit card and build a bit more credit history.
Good luck0 -

Equifax scores are irrelevent. There is no such thing as a credit score per se, each lender scores you on different criteria so value of 337 may show you are a poor risk but is only an indication nothing more.
If you've applied to Voda and TM they'll have left credit search footprints in your file. You don't say how recently they were. Any more applications and it will look like you are deperate for credit and that will ring alarm bells.
You may be better staying with Orange a few more monthe so at leat 3 months have passed so it does not look as bad in your credit file.
As stated below the big issue is probably your address and the electoral roll don't match, get that sorted and it should be fine.0 -
Vodafone automatically reject a second application within three months of the failed one.0

well vodaphone contacted me today asking about my phone order??? !!!!!! i say, you turned me down on credit!!!
they claim not, despite the email i have, apparently i can have 2 contract phones if i want!!!!
so they offer me the htc desire, 2 yr contract 600 mins, unlim text and data for 30 a month.
i point out that if i buy on the phone i will not get my 90 quid cash back from quidco. after saying no initially with a bit of haggling it looks like they will know a fiver a month of my bill for 18 mths. and i can order on monday when they have them in stock.
(they will give me a call)
so free htc desire, 24 mth contract 18mths @25 a month followed by 6 mths @30 a month. a result at last!!!0
