Brake trouble: what should I do?
I bought a Nissan Almera Tino in January 2009 from a car dealership. In June 2009 I had it serviced at a Nissan dealership and asked them to check the brakes as there was a grinding noise on the rear wheel.
The dealership replaced the rear brake discs and pads (for a total of £430 with the service) and suggested that they must have been almost worn out at the MOT which had been done on my purchase of the vehicle.
Typically, just at the start of the bank holiday weekend, on the way from Dewsbury to Stoke on Trent, the same wheel started making the same noise (with an additional rattle occassionally). RAC towed us home.
Today I had a free brake check at the Kwik-Fit garage who told me that all four brake pads would need to be replaced and the two rear brake discs, although the front ones may also need replacing soon. They quoted me £320.
I've got the car booked in at the Nissan garage for Thursday morning. My Haynes manual says the brake pads need checking every 12 months (or 12000 miles) so I really didn't expect them to be worn after only 9 months and around 7000 miles.
Have I got any rights in relation to the service from the Nissan dealership and the brake pad wear?

Hi
In the first instance, try calling the NIssan garage and getting their advice on why this has happened. You never know, they may offer some explaination or even offer to remedy it for you- do you still have the reciepts from the service?0 -
I've got the receipt of payment and should have the receipt for the work somewhere. I'm going to have a search trhough my paperwork.0

Your discs and pads always need replacing if you take it to Kwikfit :rotfl: As suggeste take it to the dealership and ask them what has caused the problem.0

Shock horror, Kwik-Fit saying all the brakes are defective.... whatever next :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Thank you, I am aware that Kwik Fit may not be the most trustworthy company but I do know there is a problem. The RAC mechanic also said the brake pads were worn out and as it happened last time I'm quite aware that it's the same problem. I would have seen my family friend who is a mechanic this morning but his garage was closed. I'm not sticking with Kwik Fit but the help I need is with what I can do with the Nissan garage.
Thank you for the constructive posts. Kwik Fit bashing may, in all likelihood, be against some sort of equality law and is, most definitely, not useful to me at the moment. I'm not stupid, I know Kwik Fit overquote, and I've used these boards under my partners username for a couple of years. Basically, be helpful or sod off.
Thank you.0 -
have you spoken to them yet?0

I rang them from Kwik Fit and they said they wouldn't expect them to go so quickly so they will look at it on Thursday. Just dreading some major problem and biiiiig bill!0

Rear brake pads and discs should not need replacing on a 2009 car unless it has done mega miles. When I bought my car the previous owner had just had them done for the first time and the car was 6 years old with 120k. I've just changed them again at the weekend (3.5 years on) and the car now has 150k. The pads probably had 2/3 of their life left but the discs had become badly corroded and pitted due to me launching my boat with the car over the past couple of years and the discs getting completely submerged!
For your pads to have worn out so quickly the brakes would need to have been stuck on and you'd notice this when you slow to a stop and then let off the brakes - you would feel binding.
EDIT to say just noticed you didnt say the car was 2009, just that you bought it then. The same still applies for the length of time it took to wear out the new set though.0 -
Needs to be checked for sticking caliper pistons/slides.0
