not been billed after 6 months

I had a new boiler installed in September last year. The installer said he needed to come back to finish and comission the boiler but I have not heard from him since. Frankly with all the bustle and expense of renovating an old house I have both been too busy to chase him and happy to delay payment. But having just had to have some other gas pipe work done it has come back to mind (I had to have some of the work done that needed doing for the comissioning of the boiler incidentally when they moved a gas cooker).

I don't really want to chase for payment as I am happy not to pay :), but equally feel honour bound to ring fence the substantial money involved in case he does eventually come back. My question is, at what point can I legally (and perhaps morally) "write off this debt" and refuse to pay even if asked?

The statute of limitation on debts is 6 years without contact, so your boiler will probably pack in first!

Why don'tyou do the sensible thing and ring him, remind him that your boiler still needs commissioning, ask him when he's coming to do it and then pay him?
Surely the boiler is unusable until it is commissoned so what's the point in delaying?

It might be useable but is it safe? How can there be work left to do if it is useable? Is it worth taking the risk with gas?
As an aside I suspect your insurer would be very quick to reject any claim in any way related to the boiler for instance if you had no proof that it had been commissioned?
Just my opinion, but I'd just contact them and arrange payment. I'd want someone else to do that if i had forgotten to invoice them for any reason, wouldn't you?

Why not pay a gas safe installer to check and issue the cert? If the installer does come back for the money simply knock of the expence that you have outlayed. If he doesnt come back WAYHEY Quids in. Sounds like hes gone "pop" anyway. No way i'd leave a job that long without payment/seeing job through

I agree...get someone in to service and give it the once over. You really need all the paperwork these days to be fair (gas/elec cert, boiler warranty etc).

If they haven't invoiced you, then they obviously don't need the money. I for certain submit my expenses as soon as I get back into the office!!

Your boiler guarantee will not be valid until you have written record that it has been commissioned and signed off.

For work that has had to be done since installation, keep written confirmation and paid bill, then deduct that from the installer's bill when it arrives.

Agree with getting someone in to finish off. But don't go behind the original guy's back. Give him 28 days to finish off - if you don't do something like that, you could find it difficult to get out of paying him in full, particularly if he claims it was your doing that he did not finish. Keep copies of letters.

Without contacting them you don't know the circumstances though. He could have been seriously ill for a while or something. The OP needs to contact them and at least give them a chance to finish the work and invoice them for it.
