Nationwide "Upgrade" to Debit card
Comments

All the talk of living in the past is getting away from the point. Personally I use cash, as it helps me to budget, I don't take my debit card out with me. The OP has said that they use a credit card and pay off the balance in full (presumably either by DD or by cheque?) so they are not living in the past.
The fact is though that even if you do find a bank with a CGC rather than a debit card, there are very few places now that take cheques, no supermarkets, most shops, so it would only be a short term solution anyway.Debts at LBM - Mortgages £128497 - non mortgage £27497 Debt now £[STRIKE]114150[/STRIKE][STRIKE]109032[/STRIKE] 64300 (mortgage) Credit cards left 0

Too much time on your hands, do you start your car with a handle at the front?
Actually I didn't know you could access this web site with a typewriter!
I don't think you need to be so rude. There are lots of people who prefer to use cash as it helps them to budget better. Not everyone has access to a computer.
Also, cheques can't be entirely eradicated as charities and local groups such as churches or scouts need to have more than one person to authorise an expenditure - they can't do this with a debit card as they need two or more signatories for a cheque.
Do you pay your window cleaner or milkman with a debit card I wonder? As it happens I do use a credit card and have online banking and pay most bills by direct debit, but I object to be made to have a debit card when I don't want one and the NW is not giving me a choice because they will not let me have a cheque book unless I 'upgrade' to a debit card.

Remember Moniker, this is MoneySavingExpert.com - People on here clean their own windows and walk to Tesco's to buy their milk
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂0 -

how anyone can thank your rudeness is beyond me, it is people like you that ruin this site when you post rude comments which are not constructive! She LEFT me, she LIED, and she made me foot the BILL ! :mad:0 -
I though that was pretty rude really. I do have a computer! But I do handwrite letters I write. I think that is something that shouldn't be lost.0

Living in the past - why not deal in gold coins, or try bartering as a form of exchange.
At least in that case somebody can't impersonate you and somehow steal all your gold coins without leaving their house.
I'm all for this type of account, I don't like the thought of somebody having the ability to empty my bank account and max out my overdraft in a matter of minutes (it has happened to me before).
At least with a credit card, if the account details are taken its the banks money that has been stolen, not my own.
Unfortunately, AFAIK every account with a cheque book (other than the Leeds one) comes with a debit card.DEBT OUTSTANDING [14.01.12]: £6,900 / £21,725 (REPAID 68%)0 -
Ha - you are all missing the point (well some of you living in the caves), if you consider it rude it's a tame forum!!
You have no control over these changes, to have one card which covers all saves costs and makes more money for the banks. Profit is king over your desires, and it makes life easier.
Move with the times and accept it, cheques have been on the way out for years having peaked in the early 90's. They only reason they are still about is because card machines are just taking time to filter through to the milkman / window cleaner due to costs
It wasn't that long ago I had to send a cheque to my solicitor now I just pay by card over the phone, how easy is that compare to writing an posting cheques.
I have also found this wonderful invention of a key to start my car, it's amazing. However I am really worried that this is being replaced by a card and a button - actually the latter makes life easier!!!0 -
The Albion Cheque Account seems to be the only account that has just a Cheque Book and Guarantee Card facility.
I am interested in this account myself. It says you need a balance of £2,500 but I rang them and they said if it falls below this you just don't get any interest but there is no other penalty unless you go overdrawn.0
