What about Sun's PDF extension for OpenOffice? You can get it directly from Sun, or from the OO extensions repository.

It doesn't seem to be widely known (or widely publicised) that this enables OO to open and edit existing .pdf files, as well as being able to save as .pdf.

I've only used it a couple of times to edit fairly simple documents and it worked fine. It has only recently moved from Beta status and so has some limitations, but if you're already an OpenOffice or StarOffice user, it would be a compact and risk-free thing to try before going for a full, stand-alone package.

It uses hardly any space, loads up fast, does everything i need it too and never had a problem with it.

Lately, Foxit has been giving me some problems when searching for text in some (not all) documents. It'll step through each occurrence of the word, but the highlight rectangle bears no relation to the location of the word within the text - in fact it doesn't even seem to be aligned with the actual text line spacing. I've yet to figure out whether it's Foxit that is at fault, or whether there's something odd about the documents themselves.

  • I'm currently using PrimoPDF. It's free and allows me to save both word docs & AutoCAD drawings in .pdf format which look great when e-mailed on.

Easy to set up and easy to use (well if I can figure it out then anybody can!) Has a drag and drop facility which when set up right saves the pdf in the same file as the original document which suits me perfectly.

Do any of these allow for full text entering as in filling out an application?

'S funny, the way so many good apps out there get picked up by professionals but don't emerge into the consciousness of the general consumer audience.

    One such being PDF-XChange Viewer.

The free version of a massively successful commercial version.

PDF-XChange Viewer does all you're asking -- which means it does more than any other pdf freeware out there.

    But it hasn't been mentioned here. Heigh-ho. . .

Oh, as to Adobe's Acrobat Reader: this software was last month confirmed to be the most targeted software. . . in the world.

Anyone using this preposterously bloated junk needs their head examining just as much as they need their computer examining afterwards for signs of malware and virus infection -- Adobe fails every time to keep up with the security patches essential to protect the Reader's vulnerabilities.

    Why don't people learn??????

I installed Foxit last weekend and to date have not been able to get it working. After reading the faq s on their site, I understand that there is a problem with Vista, the solution offered is far too coplicated for me to comprehend so I'll have to try another one.
