want sky hd package query on install

Options
thinking about getting the sky hd offer.when i asked the cust services people about the place i wanted the dish to go which is on the roof (3 bed semi) on chimney stack all they could comment was to ask the installer?

reason i want the roof is eaiser as far as i can tell to run cable plus eyesore on the front of the house facing the way the neighbours dishes are pointing.

any feedback on the above

thanks

You may think it's easier but trust me,it is'nt! Sky do not do (certainly over here) chimney installs anymore for Health & Safety reasons. Also if your home is over 2 stories high then the installer will NOT be able to do it so it'll be rescheduled for Special Heights team or refered to an outside contractor, who may charge you more as it's then classed as a 'non-standard install'.

As to mounting on the chimney, unless a lashing kit is used (and they cost extra) then all well & good, but by mounting a dish & bracket onto a chimney, then as a chimney is normally only 1 brick thickness, then drilling the chimney may cause the chimney to become dangerous, especially in old builds where the mortar is weak.

It's not going to work too well if it doesn't face the same way as theirs...
Perhaps it could go on the rear or side of the house if you have a suitable layout? It doesn't have to be high up, it can be at ground level as long as the line of sight is still there. Maybe on a rear extension looking back over the house-again, it will depend on the line of sight.

    thanks for that

the neighbours dishes are located on the front leading side/edge of their houses about halfway up.my house is the l/h/s semi and is angled away from the line of sight they seem to have, so i was assuming the dish would need to be more central ie in the middle of my house frontage to get the same line of sight...hence the thinking of the roof....i understand the H & S aspects but when i put up my own ariel on the roof/chimney and ran the cable to the tv i didnt find it too difficult!.....its just when i asked the question of the sky bod they just referred me to the installer which seems abit hit and miss as you have no real idea of the final set up until the day of the install.

i would have no real problem on the rear of the house but i dont know if it will pick up this line of sight etc and i have a single storey pitched roof extenstion so the working at height may be a issue, incidently this is where the tv is located,

    thanks again

So why don't you put up your own dish/LNB and attach the cable, then let the installers complete the job at ground level? That way you get it where you want it.

The installer they send out will NOT entertain a roof installation, he will install on the wall or he will go to the next job and leave you without Sky.

I am sure you did not find it too hard to install your aerial but if there is a even a 1% risk and you are installing 5 a day you will be dead within the year without adequate safety equipment and training and its just not worth the risk to Sky.

I would get an independent to install on the roof before the booked installation or you will have wasted time as you will need to rebook the Sky installer to come back, probably will cost around £150-175

moving on from the placing of the dish i understand they need to run a connection from the sky box to the phone socket.

does this need to be connected all the time (whats the reason for it) i have the master BT socket elsewhere in the house from where the sky is going,we may be able to connect a extension but dont really want any cables trailing or pinned to walls/skirting etc.

if the conection needs to be attached at all times can they/will they run it outside the property, it would be on the same side/wall

    thanks in advance.

If it's on the same wall then it should'nt be a problem, probably quicker too.You can get a non-phoneline install for a one off £25 but then you wont be able to use box office ect.

For one sky box no, for multi room then yes the boxes need connecting its so they know you haven't given the cheap muti-room add on to your brother/mother/son/2nd home.

If you are just having the one box tell them to leave the extension loose whilst they install and disconnect when they go.

Edit^ Good point if you want the box office etc.. then you will need the line.
