No the contract says that once it is in the hands of a foreign carrier it is not their responsibility. RM have fulfilled their part of the contract

as royal mail made there promise and delivered it as far as they can i doubt they will refund you, it will be with whoever took the parcel of royal mail that the claim will have to go to. . . . . ring royal mail and ask they will advise who you need to contact

Sorry but in my experience Royal Mail don't pay out on claims. As another poster said it's not unusual for them to loose your paperwork. I have had several packages go missing (all insured). You send off all the details & forms then never hear anything back from them. At that point RM often say they never received the forms and your stuck because you no longer have all the paperwork (photocopies don't count).
The only time I ever got a pay out was around 10 years ago when RM initially refused to payout because the Addressee hadn't filled out a denial of receipt form. Trouble was RM never sent a form to them for them to fill out. It took 18 months, threats of BBC Watchdog & a subject access request under the Data Protection Act (to see all data relating to my claim) before I got the insurance. Even then they never refunded the cost of the service which they didn't provide!
    Good luck

The claim goes through RM as normal.

Copies do count, I've had to send copies myself when RM have lost the paperwork.

  • I feel like I'm in some sort of Kafkaesque hell.

RM charged me for international signed-for delivery, with extra compensation insurance. Now it sounds like the money I paid doesn't guarantee international delivery, a signature or compensation. Then what did I pay for?

Has anyone actually been successful in claiming compensation on international parcels? Does RM ever pay out? Should I just refund the buyer and forget about it? If I'm going to lose that money, I'd rather not waste time making photocopies and filling in forms.

You're right that it is very Kafkaesque.

I have successfully claimed for international but only for lower value items with a CoP where no-one can tell if RM or the foreign PO lost it. The problem with Int signed for and Airsure is that RM can wash their hands of it as they tracked it as far as leaving for the foreign country.

The less you pay the better your protection it seems (as long as it is under 41 pounds).

I have successfully been paid out for all of my claims made in the past few years including International sales, however I never use tracking overseas as I limit myself to the 100 x 1st class stamp thingamubob.

The only payments i have had delcined was one recently where they said i had not proved value (it was a 1p Amazon novel) but they sent me a book of 1st class stamps worth £2.34 instead which basically covered my loss anyway. I also had a recorded refused in the past as RM said the post code was invalid, yet it went to a major UK uni library established in the 1600s and the post code was taken from their headed stationey and book plates. I also had another recorded declined as buyer got abusive to PO staff as they carded her for the item and then said it had been taken internally and as it was the second or third time she had had it happen she blew her top a bit.

I think that's all I can remember having refused, but I don't really lose a lot, a tiny percentage overall.

  • Just a quick update, in case anyone else is in the same situation.

I refunded the buyer's payment in full. Technically, I didn't have to 'cause it had been more than 45 days. But I'm not out to scam people, and I'm pretty certain that he didn't get the lens.

I filled in the claims form, included all of the supporting paperwork and sent it off to RM. I made copies, just in case.

That was two weeks ago. I sent the envelope recorded and guess what? It hasn't arrived! Called RM this afternoon. The first thing the guy asked was, "You didn't get scammed on eBay, did you?" I told him I wasn't. He couldn't really help beyond that. He said that once the claim arrives, it should take them two weeks to log it into the system. They aim to process claims within 90 days.

I'm going to wait another week. If the claim hasn't arrived at RM by next Friday, I'm going to file a second one for it and refile the first.

It's all a tremendous hassle that's already cost me time and money.
