    AS per original post:
I checked the tracking number on the RM site. It just says that it "has been passed to the overseas postal service for delivery in Lithuania". No sig is available.

Yes I know that but if you can go onto the track and trace website :

www . track-trace. com / post (remove all spaces), you will be able to see tracking within Lithuania, and can then enter the information into google translate.

Life insurance though insures a life, so if that life is lost the full payment is due. You need to compare it to contents insurance, if you phoned an insurer today and told them to insure your £10,000 TV and then phoned up next month and tell them it had disappeared and you wanted your £10,000 do you honestly think they would just bung a cheque in the post? Yes they have accepted your premium, but that doesn't mean they accept the claim when item is lost or stolen, you would still need to demonstrate that loss.

The item was worth what you sold it for, not what you insured it for. The packing and time etc is immaterial, you had to do that whether or not item was lost.

A new TV isn't the same as a 30-year-old lens. Though the same principle could apply for the telly. Say you bought the telly on sale for £500. The regular price is £800. The sales receipt shows a value of £500, but if you wanted to replace it, it would cost you £800. If I wanted to buy the same lens from a second-hand camera shop, it would costs £200+.

What if I had given it away for free? Would its value be zero?

The Track/Trace site gives the same info as RM, in both English and Lithuanian.

another way to look at it
if i insure my car which i bought for £500 and declare its value as £20K,the insurer will quote accordingly
however if i suffer a total loss on the car they will pay market value
    Thanks for the replies.

I'm a little reluctant to just refund the money unless I know for sure that a) the buyer hasn't received the lens, and b) I'll get the money back from RM. If I do refund, is it possible that RM will come up with proof of delivery? In that case, I won't have the lens or the money.

Also, is it possible to get the full £200 I insured the lens for? It's worth that much. I agreed with the buyer on a slightly lower BIN price because I wanted a quick sale to pay the rent.

Does the claim include the cost of the postage?

    Thanks again.

yes but its down to the receiving country to update the tracking and/or supply the confirmation data to RM

Surely that's the point of buying additional compensation insurance? I've paid for £200s worth of insurance. Shouldn't I get that, regardless of what was in the box?
No. they'll give you the value of the item. In basic terms, they give you enough to buy an identical replacement. It's like contents insurance, if you've got a £5,000 insurance policy and have a games console worth £350 nicked, you'll get £350 (in theory) so you can get a new item in place of the one you lost.

If its not tracked on RM I very much doubt it will be tracked on this site. RM normally update international tracking with no problems if the receiving country actually does it

well then how come the track and trace confirms that the package I sent was delivered, but RM only says it left the UK then?

But in the case of contents insurance, the insurance company wasn't the one who nicked your stuff. And the car insurer didn't wreck your car. Royal Mail lost the post.

Buying insurance with RM is like placing a bet. You consider the probability of RM losing the parcel and insure it accordingly.

Also, the market value is not necessarily the same as what you paid for the item. You may have paid £500 for the car, but the market value may be much lower or higher. The insurer will pay the market value, not what you paid for the car.

You may justify what you like on here. But RM will pay you what THEY want to pay you. Take it from those on here who have had endless RM claims.

well if you want to ge into semantics then RM can just say they handed your item to the foreign carrier and their job is done?

No because the seller had a contract with RM for them to deliver the goods which they didn't.
