I have just moved from XP to Win7 and am trying to get my head round UAC.
Some people don't seem to rate UAC and advise turning it off but is there any way to override UAC for AV updates only?

Maybe it's the other way round my friend, any AV program that [ report back requirement Win7 ] won't work without the UAC switched off is not Win7 certified ?
If your AV won't update automatically, how can you be confident it's even working [ real time ] at all ?
A bit more info required from you !, what AV ?

Thanks for your reply. I am using Avira and every couple of days I get a warning that it's not up to date. After agreeing to the UAC screen it updates OK.0 -
Using Avira here with 7, and never have problems with updates, never had a UAC prompt either when updating.
Is it Avira 10? Because I'm still on 9.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Spud17, ten is around with mixed opinions, although I don't think it's a final release [ September when v9 expires ? ] : http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=Avira+10&btnG=Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK|countryGB
The O/P doesn't state 64 or 32bit but it should work on both.
I used to think that one of the best weapons in the [ virus / malware ] gun cupboard was UAC, but I've run Win7 & Vista since the BETA days with it completely disabled and never had a problem, ever !
Ars says that if 100% of the people posting in this section of MSE were to turn on / and up / the UAC .. .. .. problem posts would reduce by almost 50% + : http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010/03/half-of-windows-flaws-mitigated-by-removing-admin-rights.ars
Now to the O/P, i've no idea !. I have a Vista gaming rig, to replicate your problem I put ten on, it works and updates fine with and without UAC. I've done a search for others with your particular issue and can find none - you seem to be in a minority of one.
So until you find a solution you will need to cripple UAC for AV updates and then re-enableDisclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I moved (reluctantly) from XP to Vista 15 months ago.
First thing I did was turn UAC off. It's been off ever since.
The PC is protected by Avast AV, Online Armor firewall and Win Patrol. No problems. No malware.
And no Nanny State UAC.0 -
UAC on windows 7 has differnt levels, so you might want to try tweeking it till you get what you want.
I think the problem with UAC is most users dont understand what it actually does because it was driven from the business domain not a consumer domain (and that its not really explained either).
So they just see the nag screen.0 -
Thanks again for your replies.
It's Avira 10 and Win7 64 bit with UAC on the default level.
I will wait until it happens again and report back.0 -

Yes. I've been having the prompts since mid March, but I've been hanging back, it's so good, but I was still going to give it a month before switching.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
