An N.I. number is generated usually - but not exclusively - when child benefit is first claimed. Your NHS number is different from your N.I. number.

When youre a teen you get this information, but its with you from an early age.

    thanks for the info!

how would one find out what the NI is then? or isnt it made available?

i will go back to the bank and tell what what i have read here. maybe they want my NI number?

    thanks

    Hi

One way to find out or get the NINO is to claim Disability Living Allowance the only benefit available to under 16's in their own right.

    0800 88 22 00 for the form.

You don't need to purse the claim to the end, just put it in and the letter sent will have the childs NINO on it.

I used to work in a bank, and with anyone under the age of 16, you just left that part blank as you dont normally receive your NI number until you are 16 (the bank staff should know that!!!)!!!! The computer at the tax office will register the age from the date of birth and should realise that the NI number isnt needed. I know i havnt worked in banking for a good few years now, but im sure the system hasnt changed.

I've just opened a savings account for my 6 wk old baby at Nationwide this week. (My husband and I are trustees and didn't have to give extra ID as we have accounts there). All they wanted to see was baby's birth certificate, which they photocopied, to prove he existed! No mention of NI Numbers.

At a bit of a tangent, its always worth having a certified copy of birth certificates which you can send off for things such as child benefit claims etc. as invariably they come back bent in the post, or worse could get lost. I got a couple at the same time as I registered my baby and they only cost £3.50 each.

just to add, when my ds rec'd his cft voucher he had a number on there that looked like a NINO -would it be??
no bank/bs need a nino for under 16 - we only need them for people with tax free acc's.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,

There's numpties everywhere these days  !!!!! Personally I just get the red mist every time I walk through the doors of my bank (not very often thankfully) and usually disbelieve most of what I'm told. Although, when I opened an account for DD (somewhere else) I must say they were really helpful, and as afew others have said, I have to be named as a trustee.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
