hi guys
popped into lloyds tsb today to open a savers account for my baby boy ( nearly 4 months old)
anyway got all forms filled out and the tax form said national insurance number of the applicant, i told the bank person that i dont think he has one, and she said that it will be on his medical card.
but we dont have a medical card i dont think! the only medical paper we got was with his birth certificate which we had to give to the GP to register him.
any ideas guys?

I'm no expert, but I think he will have a National Health Number - I don't think that's the same as a National Insurance number - I'm sure you don't get one of these until you're 16!???!!:j £2 coin saver club £52 :j

Doesn't he have a red book, which the HV gives you to record his weight and development? That should have his NHS number in it.
Having said that, I thought you only got an NI number when you were a teenager just before your 16th birthday. That's certainly when I got mine (20 years ago though!) My NHS number and my NI number aren't the same. I don't think my kids aged 5 and 6 have NI numbers either although they do have NHS numbers.0 -
Hiya
I may be wrong, but i don't think the GP needed to keep the birth certificate. You can get a copy from where you registered him, but you should really have the original.
You should have been sent an NHS medical card with his NHS number on it, when he was registered with the GP. It comes from the local health authority so may be worth giving them, or your GP, a call? Perhaps they're just slow getting them sent out.

Just to add - I agree - the National Insurance number will be given him when he's 16.

An N.I. number is generated usually - but not exclusively - when child benefit is first claimed. Your NHS number is different from your N.I. number.
When youre a teen you get this information, but its with you from an early age.

Thinking about it some more - I thought banks etc insisted on a birth certificate now? I've never been asked for more than that to open any for my children.
Yes, NI and NHS numbers are different - I guess they count the NHS number as proof of a registered birth for children, as he won't have been given a NI number yet?0 -
hi guys, thanks for the replies!
just to confirm, i didnt give the birth cert to the gp, there as a gree medical paper that came with it that i had to give in to the GP.
i know his NHS number, its written on his vaccinaion letters that came through the post, we have not claimed for child benefit yet, we are in the process of sorting that out.
i may pop down to the GP and ask them0 -
At that age, your child cannot have an account in their own name. Check with the Bank - I would suggest it's actually YOUR NI number that should go in there - other posters may offer different advice but I can't see how a 4 month old can have their own NI number.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0

It's not an NI number it's an NHS number. My son received a medical card when he was a baby. We've set up a savings account for him but it's in my OH's name as trustee.
