  • The monthly 'frills' section has made me aware that I was spending alot on Entertainment and 'miscellaneous' so have cut down on these loads.

Hi Eager Learner - this is fantastic - I've filled out quite a few bits and it's really fun and great for the Grocery Challenge - much better than the small spreadsheet I have as it has "preeedy pictures" too... (much more encouraging than my efforts with the conditional formatting...:D )

Only thing I found was when I worked out what I could pay off in a year on it (it's really great for that by the way) when I scrolled back up to the 'tower', it had gone  which was quite sad as I liked the tower - I know that's a good thing really, but I think I will like to watch it come down bit by bit each month, so will put these figures in as each month passes - gives me more encouragement that way...;)

I've not managed to read all posts in here, so someone may have mentioned this already, but I don't seem to have a monthly frills section on my spreadsheet - not sure if this is because it is the 2008 updated version or not - I have spending/spending chart/shopping chart/savings pot/debt buster... I like the sound of the 'frills' section and wonder can I copy & paste like you mentioned before to get this or should I download from another area?

Overall, fantastic spreadsheet - well done, you have put a lot of hard work into that - be very proud of yourself! :T :T :T

    Hi EagerLearner

Your spreadsheet looks great but I can't seem to get it to do what I want. Basically I have various savings pots with HBOS but their rate is poor now. I'd like to move them to a better paying account but very few do "pots". So if I move the whole lot to one account I'd like to still keep track of what was in each pot.

    How do I get your spreadsheet to do this?;

    1. Start with the amount I have currently in each pot.
    2. Allow a monthly deposit into each pot.
    3. Allow for taking a withdrawal as necessary.

Hopefully you can help as i can't seem to get my head around making my own spreadsheet to do it.

    Hi Jem
I'm not sure, but from what I can tell from the spreadsheet you still list individually and how much you want to put away for each pot, but then total these amounts up and put that amount into your new savings account

ie: Christmas = £200 saved so far, pay in £50 pm, Holidays = £500 saved so far, pay in £75 pm, Extras = £300 saved so far, pay in £20 pm
I would list your totals in the month before you started to use the spreadsheet - ie: starting this month (Aug) put your totals under July, then the amount you saved for each one as you go along

    Ie:

    ................. July...... August...... Sept...... Total
    Christmas ... £200 .... £50 .......... £40 ...... £290
    Holidays ..... £500 .... £75 .......... £75 ...... £650
    Extras ....... £300 ..... £20 ......... -£100 .... £220
    Totals ..... £1000 ... £145 ......... £15.......£1160

So total in your HBOS savings account would be £1160 at the end of september, split into £290 for Christmas, £650 for Holidays and £220 for extras...

(also, in above example, you may have had to draw £100 out from your extras pot, so you put in a minus)

Hope that makes sense? As I said, I am not sure so this might be totally wrong, but try it and see - you can always delete it…

  • Hi Eager Learner
Have just caught up with all the posts you have had on here - really impressed with the spreadsheet, well done.. it will definitely help me organise my spending and help me save too - I'm looking forward to watching my tower grow...:D :j

One thing I have noticed is that people are asking about an income page too, are you thinking of putting that on? I know you have quidco, etc, but it would be great to have something that we could see what is coming in - weekly wages, additional jobs, overtime, windfalls, etc - any ideas on that yet?

    Thanks again,
    Denise

Hi Denise those are some great ideas and I must admit, on my one at home, I have added an extra sheet for MSE savings, which is essentially any extra cash made from MSE ideas / Pigsback / Cashback sites. It's not very exciting though as it's just a few rows!

    If you see my blog:
    http://savingsnow.blogspot.com/

There is an article there about some extra spreadsheets which might be of interest? They may complement the one I did, unless you literally wanted an extra tab on my one for income, say?

Let me know and I can work on something this weekend as will have some time - and I love spreadheets... x

Oooh, an extra tab would be great - I added a basic one for wages, etc but I am sure that you can make a better job than me.

Just got your email too, I haven't had chance to read it all but looks great - Love the spread sheet you've done, Thank you for sending it to me, can't wait to try it all out...

  • Hi EagerLearner. I was on GC and noticed your Budgeting and Debt spreadsheet in your signature- Great idea. I personally don't have any debt apart from the mortgage! I have my own spreadsheet for my bill budgeting and spends etc but this will come in handy because it transfers things into charts (something I have never managed to figure out) This is brilliant and if it helps others see their debts going down I'm all for it. And I will be using the saving pot tab and a bit of the spending one for my grocery challenge. May thanks
Thanks to MSE savings we got to go to Disneyworld Florida.

Glad to help Chocolateteddy! I use mine for savings as well rather than the debts.

I use www.spendingdiary.com for grocery challenge as I can enter data into it from work whilst I remember what I spent :p
