Mine was just before I joined MSE in 2008. I knew I had a debt problem that I needed to deal with but just didn't know where to start and what to do.
I was close to signing up with a fee charging dmp company as I was not aware of any others - so glad I found this forum and signed up with CCCS and I'm now going to be debt free sooner than I thought I would be, thanks to MSE and all the wonderful people here.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 2014

I first joined in 2008, posted my SOA, got a bit freaked out by some of the more extreme responses and went back into hiding. Although I was paying off my debts, I wouldn't say I was tackling them with the determination I am this time! Now I've got a DFW diary, a spending diary and a huge desire to beat the provisional date in my head

It took me a good 2 years to get to where I am now!Jan10: 28,315.81 Jan11: 18,015.32 Jan12: 7,682.58 Jan13: 2,987.73 Current debt: 1,225.55

What sort of "extreme responses" did you get Niccatw?I first joined in 2008, posted my SOA, got a bit freaked out by some of the more extreme responses and went back into hiding. They probably weren't that extreme, depending when you had you lightbulb moment and how determined you are about your debt-busting, but I got a lot of people telling me to sell my flat.
Instead I got a lodger and a second job, which worked out much better for me! Though there are no doubt people who would say I should charge my lodger more. I don't because if he left tomorrow, I could just about cover his share - and the chances are it'd cost him more tomove than to stick around.
Can't wait to get to the point where I don't need either though

Thanks for replying Niccatw

I don't know your situation but selling your home does sound rather extreme...
But I thought you meant that you had got some flak from unsympathetic types so glad it wasn't that at least

Nah, just think I was a bit sensitive and defensive at the time! Which is why I always try to temper people's more blunt replies. I know there comes a point when we all need a good kick up the a**, but some-one's first post isn't the best time for that!
Now, I ask people not to let me off the hook when I'm being lax, it's the only way :rotfl:. Jan10: 28,315.81 Jan11: 18,015.32 Jan12: 7,682.58 Jan13: 2,987.73 Current debt: 1,225.55

I don't think it goes it in a straight line for most people. I have had months when I have ebayed, surveyed quidcoed worked extra shifts, not left the house for fear of spending money and made huge overpayments and its been great but its no way to live.
And then I have had months when I have manged to just make the payments and probably spent on the CC to boot! Like anything you have up and downs!
Now things are more balanced, I paid off the cc and just have the loan to go. Its going well this month but next month we'll see!

Hi op what a good thread. Ok I joined the forum officially in 2007, but didn't really post but lurked. I cleared my £1000 od in 2 months after doing all of the usual stuff (cheaper suppliers, drop a brand etc) then went through hell personally so spent as a form of escape, met my oh and lived well beond my means in the first 6 mnths and racked up more debt on top of what I already had . Then last year I got a £5000 inheritance and used that to clear alot of my debts. However again I over spent, was not as sensible with my 0% interest od as I should have been (it ends on 22 june), racked up the available od on my old bank account (we went to portugal in august last year and eygpt in Nov
). Started 2010 in £6225 in debt after writing my car off in Dec last year and needing to buy another car on my cc , along with loan, ods...
So in Jan this year I made a committment to clear this once and for all (with the receession its been frightening to think what would happen if I lost my job...) I now have £3324
and intend to have no debt and money to my name by Dec 2010
So, (sorry long winded answer!!) its been about 3 years from joining this site and really dealing with my debt...DF as at 30/12/16

Mine was realising we ended up overdrwan each month, whilst making a dent in our debt, but by budgeting and changing the way we have done things, we could end each month in credit, having saved and paid more towards the debt. We have cleared about 13k of debt in a year, and been clever about the way we do things.0
